My calculations using a 15" diameter wheel and using 63360 inches in a mile and a 200 mile journey - somebody will tell me about 250,000 revolutions  The only thing to bodge this with is a condom! (Don't try sowing these up!) As Sean say's if it is a small tear then it might be better to glue, stitch or put a puncture patch on it I can see the plastic ravelling up and tearing the gaiter further OR it will get warm and fall off BUT - if you hadn't bodged it and it had split on a 200 mile journey you wouldn't have known until you got there.
