 Gear Box
2CViking wrote: Not Sammie this time but Mister Kelso ended his National at 2CViking fixing the gear box. The garage guys at the meeting had a try removing the lid and rear cover, only to closed it again doing nothing + missing the selector fork ring unscrewing. They did the 2 rear nuts forgetting locking the speedo nut The 2-3 sliding pinion moved forward rubbing on the back of the input shaft gear, making a terrible noise. The selector ring nearly came off the thread but luckily didn't. I may find other things as the box is stripped completely Well I did find other things. I guess the 2 hour rebuilt job is down the drain It just show that one can NEVER do a quick repair unless prepared to accept a compromised box.

 Re: Gear Box
My dad made me shake my head in absolute wonder a few weeks back when, upon trying to decide if a gearbox was 'good', he sat it on the ground, moved the selector to each position, and when it didn't explode into a million parts declared 'That's a good one, that is..." I'm far from an expert mechanic, and gearboxes are mysterious casings full of teeth and oil to me, but even I knew there was slightly more to it than that

 Re: Gear Box
Viking, guess the technical term for that particular gearbox is ' totally sh@gged'? Picked up a scrapper a few weeks back and the owner threw a couple of extra gearboxes into the trailer as we were leaving. So far, I've only had time for a quick look at one of them and the rear main bearing on that had just one ball bearing left in the cage. Some folk never know when to give up, pressing on regardless of the sounds of protest from the machinery, until the big bang happens and all that's left is scrap... ken

Should be back on its feet Wednesday afternoon. You should have seen what was presented to me at the French National. One box running for hundreds of clicks WITHOUT OIL.

 Re: Gear Box
Tell me again that ''the final drive'' is not necessary to consider when restoring the famous 2 hour rebuilt. This box was handed to me at the French national but didn't have time to look at it. Did today, oh boy is it buggered. Metal everywhere. I'm restoring this box (maybe a little more than 2 hours)

 Re: Gear Box
Viking, is there anything usable/restorable left in that gearbox? It looks worse than the last one which you photographed and that was quite a mess... ken

 Re: Gear Box
More and more boxes are coming in for work. It just shows that ignoring early signs (noises) is something that comes back later to bite your wallet. This box is sadly retiring to parts only, whats left of it. Luckily I have plenty of early 425 boxes but it is getting to a 3 : 1 ratio to produce something usable. Yesterday a 2cv4 came in being rejected at CT (brakes etc) The owner want nothing done except getting it back through CT with a minimum of repairs (did one rear brake side only) The gear box is just about to explode, input shaft bearing collapsed. Do you thing the owner cares NO. ''I'll come back maybe one day. Surely it should last a little longer'' Ya right the entire box will be destroyed and he will pay even more. I shouldn't write this but I hope it will fuck up on the way to the second visit
