Not sure about incompetence but I'm sure that there are plenty of dodgy/bent MOT testers. My Escort van has turned out to be more rotten than a pear and has a clean MOT with no advisories. If it got through its last test without the help of a bribe then I'm a monkey's uncle.

Except that (apart from a few exceptions) it's illegal to drive a car on the road that is not fit to pass an mot and your insurance company probably won't cover you. :(

Don't do that. I'll give you a few quid for it ;)

I've never had any car fail an MOT in 20years*. Not miraculous, just planning and preparation - I take it in to my specialist for a service and MOT. They sort out anything needed for the test first, after letting me know any issues, then take it to be MOTd.

(*though to be fair I did sell the last CX a week before it needed one).

My Dyane failed yesterday on corrosion in the front floorpan. I appreciate that this needs fixing and fixing properly, but the reason he's given on the ticket is that it's corrosion within a specified distance of a suspension mount. Surely that's irrelevant, since the suspension is mounted on the chassis? Not that I'll be appealing it or anything ... as I say, it needs fixing anyway and the chances of me ever doing it without an MOT fail to push me into it are small. :)

I was reading a similar topic on autoshite, basically it's distance that seems to count not location.

Probably just picked the wrong fail point from the list, since it'd be a fail within 30cm of a body-chassis mount or a seatbelt mount - and that don't leave much...
