Are you building an off roader/4x4?

The grease nipples seem the smart way to go, I can see the practicality of having them on the suspension arm bearings but where to put one on the steering rack?

that nut is M6 and takes a grease nipple when its all assembled ( with credit to Ken and Rick)

the pinion nipple : its possible to drill and tap the hole with the pinion in situ with it working perfectly afterwards- just dont drill too deep!

This will be the new family car :) and I thrash the shit out of it on lots of dirt roads...

I was sandblasting the suspension arms and cross-members when i noticed that the front wheel hub bearings have play in them... replaced 8yrs ago... I assume that with the arm off and drive shafts out there should be no play in the hub bearing...

So, SKF are the top quality, what are the waterproof, made in France, ones like, any experience?

Cheers,

Harley

With the hub it undone you'll notice a lot of play in the wheel bearings, quite normal. It's when the hub it is done up and the drive shaft in that play in that bearing is a problem.

On the 4x4 I hace greaseable bearings. The hub is drilled and tapped for a grease nipple and then a snall channel cround into the bearing to alliow the grease to enter the bearing from one side. As I remember it the seal on the other side is reversed to let the old grease out.

Prior to this set up I was going tru bearings eery season but now I've done over 5 years on the last set. At the end of a days off road/play/fording just jack up the wheel spin it slowly and pump fresh grease in and the water filled stuff comes out.

Louis Barbour did the modifications and I think it is now standard to most of his kits.

Alternative Approach...

Part 1
MEASURE VERY CAREFULLY..
Drill and tap 8mm hole between bearing and outer seal.
Use a Dremel to make a small grove in hub if required, (if the hole is drilled correctly this step is not required)
Fit 8mm grease nipple.

Part 2
MEASURE VERY CAREFULLY..
Drill a 2mm hole between the bearing and the retaining nut.
Fit the nut and mark where the hole is located.
Use a Dremel to make a small grove in nut if required,

Part 3
Fit standard seals in the normal way.
Fit the drive shaft or a cut-off outer stub.
Grease and rotate the bearing at the same time.
The grease will fill the bearing and pass thru and come out of the 2mm hole..

ps No need to grind the bearing

Perhaps my bearing isn't ground and there is a groove in the hub. That would kind of make more sense.
Can't remember now and as I don't take them apart so regular any more I can't remember what exactly was done but you get the idea...
