Doesn't seem to work quite like that with typical UK weather, unfortunately...

Isn't that a UK registered car which you're working on?
If it is, I guess you've spotted that over here, they seem to rust in places which never seem to suffer so badly when the cars stay 'at home' in France.

Which one Ken, the beige or white 2cv? Well this is ''little britain'' (Brittany) and this area is similar to your neck of the woods. Damp most of the year so 2cvs here are just as rusted as the UK.

Carpet is a good idea. Just get one that doesn't absorb much water, is "breathing" and dries quick! I bought one designed for outdoor use, outside houses and on small boats. If you hold it up against the sky, you can see light through it, so no water is getting trapped under it. It dries up trough the carpet. It is also soft and nice for you're feet when driving barefoot! (I do that allot in summer 8-) )
Directly translated from the Norwegian word for this kind of carpet, we call it "Carpet grass" or "Balcony grass".

I recommend it!

But after I repaired rust under the windscreen-rubber, the car is 100% waterproof. Absolutely no water is getting in when driving or parked, so the floor and carpet is always dry anyway.

Carpets come in different colors, I'm getting a red one for my red'n white D*lly

I shall do my best to stop the water before I look at the carpet. It is just about the worst thing as I fear the rot. Will put newspaper in foot well to soak it up as am going on holiday for a week and can't stand the idea of a wet footwell for a week!

That's the worth thing you kan do. It will stay wet forever. Get rid of everything, drill the holes in the floor and let it dry. No matter what you do, 2cv's will always take in water, so get used to it

The newspaper is a temp solution while I am on holiday. I will address the issue in full and correctly when I get back.

When I first got the car the driver side had water in the footwell, but I worked out that the roof was leaking and put a puncture repair on there, now the drivers side is bone dry.

Prob get a new roof anyway.

If you're leaving the car then you're better off taking any carpets and mats out and leaving it bare, with a couple of drain holes. Putting newspaper onto it will keep it wet, and hold the water against the floor. Even a hot day won't dry it up. Unless you're leaving it a long time I'm sure it won't do it any harm, bit rest assured it isn't doing it any good.

I need help!

Major water in footwell now and no idea where it is coming from!

I need a garage with some knowledge of 2cv's really.

Newspapers are soaking up the water and I remove them when they are fully wet and put a fresh newspaper/sponge in.

You need to sit in the car with the mats, dash trim and seats out of it and get somebody to squirt a hose all over it. While they do that you can see where the water is coming in. Most likely wiper spindles, depending how good/bad the bodywork is, could be screen surround, bonnet hinge, vent flap...
