The deal is that you can not transfer a car off the road with a Carte de Grise to the new owner without restoring the car first and present it to Controle Technique.

Isn't that the same thing.

I have two cars here at the moment that I have CT non roulant on. [if you want I will scan the document to show you them].

Have you asked a French club to take it up with FFVE?

No need sir. Just been to CT last week with this D*lly.

The D*lly is transfered to our name (business name) and we can use the D*lly for parts to sell or restore the beats. We can also sell the D*lly to anybody as it is but the person buying it can not tranfer to his name without restoring it first.

So what happens if he uses it in the meantime - say, he gets caught on a speed radar?

They come after you?

Or is there some way to "break the link" between you and the car, without establishing a link between the car and the new owner? I s'pose, because of the way the French registrations are within a dept rather than nationally, they must be. Same with exporting - will our AK still be linked to the old owner?

That I can not say.
When selling a car, the seller will provide you with a sales contract, so he is clear. Your AK is legally yours if you have a document signed by the seller and you. Using an unregistered vehicle is bad news if caught, don't know if caught by speed camera but think that the previous owner is not liable.

There is a new system of Number plate in France, now. It's done centrally, not by department. When you buy a secondhand car, it will be issued with a new style number plate, that will stay with it for "life", like in the UK.

Ah, yes, I'd forgotten they were inflicting that not just on new cars, but on ALL cars that have changed (owners? dept?) since the start of last year... Makes sense, I s'pose, but it's just WRONG.

<edit: reads Wiki link... Postponed from Jan to Apr to Oct due to "economy" and "computer bugs". Ha. It's not just the UK, then...)

When I was over there, week before last, I was shocked :o at the amount of cars with the new style plates. At this rate, the old Dept. style, will be mostly gone in five years. :(
