Sounds likely that it's not timed properly using the static method

Even with these fully electronic ignition units, I'd suggest that it's _always_ worth checking the total advance using a strobe.
I had to send one brand new unit back to the manufacturer because the ignition advance was around 15* less than it should have been.
Hardly surprising that the engine seemed rather sluggish...

@ Warren,
how many miles did that set of points last?
Static and full advance marks should still be on the flywheel, btw.

Ken, I've done about 13,000 miles since you last saw the car, the points were still fine, but I liked the idea of maintenance free so thought I would get ahead of myself before they needed attention.

I think I need to get the car up to you soon, the brakes are getting squeaky at low speeds, though they still pull the car up firm and square, I think the front n's may be grabbing as the car body seems to get pulled down diagonally to the n's front just as I come to a stand still, accompanied by some brake graunchiness. A mate of mine reckons it's a suspension problem of some sort, which it could be, but I'm inclined to think it's brake related.

I've been doing general maintenance things like oil & filters and greasing myself, but I'd rather brakes and suspension were seen to by an expert.

Met up with a load of Brits at a regular classic car meeting that I didn't know existed. Drove little Réne there and back over hills and valleys - no probs.

Visited a guy on the way back with 7 Messerschmitt car and a bunch of other 3 wheeler "jetson" cars. They looked fantastic.

Good day out and met a lot of contacts for paint, engine work etc.

Better get him in the garage as I also found a few leaks on the way, had to drive with a towel over my legs to keep dry ;)

I fitted 123 ignition. I followed the instructions carefully and read up elsewhere too and watched the videos before proceeding, I'm very thorough and can't see how I have got anything wrong or done anything other than a textbook job, each step checked, double checked & triple checked. And yet I'm underwhelmed. It seems to go similarly to before in terms of pull, acceleration, top end etc., but it now seems just a touch unresponsive, especially when I blip the throttle at idle, the revs don't seem to zip up as readily as before, and I'm getting a bit of a damp sooty exhaust patch on the drive too where the tailpipe points downwards.

the 123 wont make the car magically better than a well set up engine on points

they are better than a failing condenser
they are better than a worn points cam
they don't need adjusting every few 10s of 000s of miles

other than that that they can be prone to having wonky advance curves and dont like a suspect battery.

an advanced engine will seem crisper and more responsive but will also self destruct when pushed. A safely set up engine often seems sluggish by comparison but you wont sieze it , the oil leaks will dissapear and you wont be tipping oil out your filter housing.

I would love to drive the first one just as it is. What a bargain though!
