That would be someone who did not know the significance of the breather.
Remember ... this is boxer engine and not all engines suffer so much ...

Ok so, new (standard) rear crank seal fitted ... still pissing out oil though

This leak was detected when the engine was cranking over and not actually running.

Before I go down the route of an oversized, (or would that be under sized) seal (thanks for the suggestion Sean), is there anything else I should check. Bear in mind this engine has been rebuilt by someone else and this is the first time it has been run.

:(

Are you sure it is the oil seal and not the 2 faces of the block. As you have not done the rebuild yourself - do you know if sealant used between mateing parts. Also oil pump there. gasket in place.......?

Dave,
as with any other parts, doesn't the rule of 'replace when not working correctly' apply?

If they've never been overheated or choked with excessive blowby, I find that they work as they should for a lot longer than that randomly chosen figure of 5 years.

Hi Chris

It does look like it is coming out between the seal lip and the crankshaft and it only leaks when the engine is turning over or running so I guess this is when there is oil pressure.

I have never had one of these engines apart, so seek advise, if a component could be fitted incorrectly and blocking an oil way thereby forcing oil past the seal!

I believe that the oil comes from the oil pump and straight to that bearing via a tube moulded into the casing. Did you set the seal in correctly - outside edge 0.5mm inside casing. Very easy to push it in too far and then the seal deforms leaving a big gap to the crank.

I agree Ken, however had I'd purchased a "rebuilt" or "reconditioned" engine at some of the crazy prices on eBay I would, on the list of new parts, expect to see a new breather.

It's all about lexis ;)

I think you will have to scrap that one and remove with screws etc as per the first one. SORRY
