an acad box may be the same ratios as the dyane anyway ....im not going looking it up you can do that

long spline inputs work with all clutches short are'nt ideal on diaphragm ones

Well I never, so a Acad has the same ratio's as a Dyane. I always thought that it was the same as a 2CV as there'd be no point in the high 4th.

Or do Acad's run at 8.5:1 rather than 9:1 compression there is something non Dyane about them I'm sure.

I do know that Acads seem to suffer more from fan pulley failure for some reason, probably people revving the tits off them in 3rd to change up into an unnecessary tall 4th gear most likely.

Did Rick strip both out put hubs and replaced both bearings? Checked-Seals good. No detectable wear.
Did Rick strip the Crown wheel (replacing the bearings)? Bearings replaced.
Did Rick strip the planet gears and satellite gears? There are no planet and satellite gears in a differential. You are thinking of epicyclic gears - as in auto gearboxes or Model T Fords. They are bevel gears which rarely wear out, but sometimes break which is obvious to see.

All of these items are technically the final drive, so I stand by my comment of a fully rebuilt gearbox.

Yes but I thought (???) that Dyanes/Acads all had the same number of teeth (one more than 2CV?). ???

Be careful, the input shaft may have the same numbers of teeth but not the same diameter. The lower train gear needs to match the input shaft. They are cut together. If not matching together, it can be noisy.
I didn't realise that the diameters can vary too and I hadn't considered the gear being cut together with the lower one.

That's what I thought. That's why I asked about the two options:
1: fitting the Acad long-spline input shaft to my existing drum-brake Dyane g/box, or 2: using the complete Acad g/box and changing it to drums.

Thanks very much all. It looks like the second option is the best.

(I'll let you get back to Russ's gearbox now!)

Yeah...since little or nothing is known about the principles of magneto reluctance diagnosing faults can be a problem....guess we all just need to refer to the manual and songbook :D

For the purposes of obscurity I have removed the casing :-)

Matt,
as with other commercial versions of passenger cars, Acadiane engines were detuned slightly to make them more suitable for 'load lugging'.

I've never noticed any greater tendency for Acadiane fan pulleys to break, from what I've seen it's the attitude to the machinery of the nut behind the steering wheel which is much more relevant...

That video is brilliant. Who said the Americans don't have a sense of humour.
