Post Sticking Gearbox
I might have found one reason why towing my AZU 300km was not a good idea. It seems to have buggered my gearbox a little. Sounds rough as anything and I am getting stuck in either one side ( 1st & 2nd ) or the other ( 3rd & 4th).
It is really hard to select first gear too.

What could this be, can i take the lid off and see anything that could have happened on the journey today, stuck or worn something.

And would traveling 100kph in neutral do some damage???

I have to get him home somehowc

Normaly being towed in neutral (for several 100. of km) doesn't harm a gearbox..

But hey, in which condition is your box???? Did you change oil (first thing you need to do when buying a new car) did you at least check the oil level?????? so are you shore theres oil in there at all??????

Check these things first..... and yes you can take the lid of no problem.....

From another forum.
"I've flat towed my Avion as far as Rome (drove it back) and all over France and Germany as we usually take it on holiday and use it as a trailer for the kids toys on the way down and for me to run around in when we're there.
The gearbox still performs well with smooth changes and no whine. However, I've been told that unless the input shaft is turning then the box doesn't get lubricated properly. If this were true, you'd think a 1200 mile journey to Rome at speeds of up to 100mph would be enough to cause some noticeable problems - but no... I'm told I've been very lucky and it's only a matter of time. We'll see.
"

But, as ipgo says, it's vital that there's enough (clean) oil in the gearbox.
It's depressing how often you find a cupful of black sludge is all that comes out of the gearbox drain plug on an A series, even with some which have been recently 'restored'... :(

If you going to tow it back home - remove both drive shafts.

Hmm, if you remove the outer driveshafts the wheels will come off with the hubs, if you remove the inner driveshafts the outers will flap around and do more damage to everything in their path. I don't know much about gearboxes but my gut feeling is that it was probably on its way out anyway, I can't see that towing it would do much harm if it were in good order.

What I meant to say was remove the drive shafts and leave the outer 2cv joint in place - or get a trailer to take home..........

Towing an a model is not a problem at all. The wheels are turning the crown and pinion just like driving. In neutral the top shaft is not moving. The pinion shaft is but covered in oil, so no worries unless not enough or old oil.

It has been an eventful day but not quite there yet. Basically everyone loves our van and it is the oldest here (some say it is older than the registered date due to the roof being in 3 parts). So I have a Que of people to help. I have been working with a great young mechanic and figures it is the clutch. So out with the engine in the middle of the field.
Clutch is covered in oil but not from the engine. Gear box oil is rancid so we changed that too.

Changed clutch and have put engine back in but it is still not engaging. It seems the graphite clutch mechanism is not aligned.

Tomorrow morning we will be doing a rerun and taking it all apart again.

We also fixed the charging problem I didn't know I had.

Downside to all of this we missed the rally and the solex run :(

Back home now but found out the problem with the clutch - the new part was thew wrong part even though it said it was the right one.

The original has a concave back so clearing some protruding nuts where the new one was flat so pressed up against the nut not allowing the clutch to disengage.

Pain in the arse having to take the engine out again but good to know it was not my fault. Need to find a similar new clutch - any ideas for suppliers :?:

But gear box is still sticking. 1st into 2nd is great then blocks in 3rd. I stop, wiggle and pull into 1st, engage clutch slightly to get 1st gear and then ALL gears work. A little down the road same thing happens, blocking in 3rd.

I am going to take the gear box out but if anyone has any ideas then let me know. I also think there is oil coming from the gearbox into the bell housing and ultimately onto the clutch. - WHERE FROM :?: :?: :?:

Cheers
Ian

Ian,could be the input shaft seal leaking,or what ever seals the shaft. If I were you,I wouldnt mess about with it,give it to someone who knows about gearboxs and get it overhauled.Obviously there is something wrong inside.Mr.Pembro?
