I have a spare engine in the shed and would like to know if I have a "llight" or "heavy" flywheel......I'm hoping its the latter, slow and steady would suit my driving style better I also need a cylinder head (drivers side) with decent exhaust studs...... Cheers gerry Hi further to other answers do you have the engine number? If the engine plate is red then its 1980's, and light flywheels came in around Feb 82, so the chances are that if its got a red plate its a light flywheel engine. There are other visual indicators too. Discbrake or drum brake front cowling, metal cooling shrouds etc I can really recommend a heavy flywheel as the car is much smoother to drive, and I wonder if the extra weight low down at the front might give the car a better feel as well. Try it and if you don't like it swap it back.

 Re: engine dating.....
Those crankcases are 1985 vintage, if that's any help. Have you measured the width of the shoulder on the flywheel, as advised by Roy at ECAS? 9mm = diaphragm clutch/light flywheel, 13mm = proper flywheel & coil spring clutch (or aftermarket diaphragm type). Ken

 Re: engine dating.....
thats probably the least helpfull angle you could possibly have taken a photo from - sods law looks light by the small champfer on the rear edge of the boss (when i said "boss in front of" you should have known i meant "to the rear of") red tag, 05 year numeral coconut engine shrouds ....its a D*lly powerplant with light flywheel and too small primary main jet in the carb Ill have a look for a spare heavy - ken has a stockpile of flywheels but i suspect its really a balance weight to keep the earth spinning at the correct speed by counteracting the lightening effect of all that missing coal under Yorkshire.

 Re: engine dating.....
Sean, close, but no cigar, as that stack is actually a tuned mass damper. Also tested and proven, since the shed it's designed to protect didn't collapse during the Market Rasen earthquake a few years ago. Afficionados of Citroen's 2CV will be familiar with the principle, since early version of this design masterpiece.... blah, blah, etc. Ken IMG_2833 by slcchassis, on Flickr
