DA,
I've got a bare (5 speed 8-)) gearbox here, packed and ready for shipping to Switzerland, which weighs 23kg on its own.

If your consignment includes calipers, discs, inner driveshafts and an engine complete with flywheel, I'd have thought that the total weight is going to be over 100 kg...

Whereabouts are you? And where's the engine? If it's somewhere near the M5 I might be able to help ... I could collect it and store it in my shed for a while for you. Otherwise, try anyvan.com

Oops, sorry - it's a normal 2CV engine & 'box! (Any idea what these weigh - would it be around 35 to 40kg?)

I bought this on eBay - I've just checked - back in August 2009! I had a loose agreement with the guy before buying it that, as I was in no rush for it, he'd bring it along the next time he'd be heading down the M5 - which he reckoned he did on a regular basis - and I'd arrange to meet him on there and give him a tenner for his trouble. This, unfortunately, hasn't come about - which isn't really a problem as I always accepted that there was a chance I might have to go and fetch it myself. He's now moving house, tho', and needs the room! It's also the prompt I need to get my finger out and fix my poor bludy 2CV...

Just exploring the possibilities before taking to the road - it's 200 miles each way...

Jeepers, Ken - really?! :o

I thought I read on one of these threads that the engine was reckoned to be - just about - a one-person lift (I mean in 'emergencies', not to carry around!) so guessed that would make it about 30-odd kg? The 'box would be significantly lighter - 10-odd kg? But I'm very likely waaaay off the mark as I clearly haven't a clue. I'm not sure what else is on the engine either as the advert has since disappeared due to time - I suspect not much (I mainly bought it for the 'box which he reckoned was around a 50k-miler).

Rhythm, that's a very kind offer - thanks. Unfortunately, it's waaay over in Pembrokeshire, hence my 2-year delay in going to pick it up!

66 kg for an engine, according to this site. ( Also explains why I've got 'mechanic's back' after years of lifting the blighters on my own. )

Note that this figure will be lower if a later flywheel is fitted, but not by a great deal.

A gearbox complete with starter motor, discs and calipers is going to be around 35kg, maybe a shade more.

Best be glad it's not a GS engine and box you've bought, that's definitely engine crane territory... ;)

Or indeed a 2.25 Land Rover diesel engine ... I'll not be carrying that bugger up the garden to my shed.

Many thanks, all, for all the advice and the offers of help, both here and pm'd - genuinely humbled and grateful  .

For information, 'Anyvan' is potentially a very useful site for future use. I was amazed at the number of replies - tho' I realised later that most were lower bids submitted by the same people; do they see eachother's bids, I wonder, and bid against them? Anyways, when I checked my emails, I found a good dozen responses sitting in there which started at £200 and ended at £69... blimey. Anything in the order of £69 to £100 strikes me as being pretty darned reasonable for an engine & 'box and, if I couldn't do it myself, would be a very useful call.

As it happens, tho', it's looking as if I might not have to saddle up even my own wagon, as a shy and retiring ( ;) ) member of this forum has kindly offered to help me out, pm-ing me a 'shucks, it's nay bother' type of email. I don't want to embarrass the individual, so no names.

(But 'Many thanks Dave'... ;) )

What a forum crowd :D .
