My dad bought me a rough running 1937 A7 for £5 when I was 13 to stop me constantly fiddling under the bonnet of his new car. I took it apart and lost a lot of the bits in the gravel drive so sold it a year later for £4. My first experience of car depreciation. Clearly market forces were not so strong then

Yes, but parts and servicing will still be at Aston prices and servicing a bog standard modern car is mightily expensive, so you can only imagine how MUCH an Aston will cost

Not really. One of the primary reasons for my buying a 2cv was to reduce motoring costs (as well as the pleasure of owning a simple, quirky and fun car). I once had a Range Rover Classic for a couple of years, the most comfortable and quick four wheeled vehicle I've ever owned, but after two years of 12 - 15 mpg it had to go. Mind you, I found it impossible not to boot the 3.9 fuel injected V8 at every opportunity, which just might have had some bearing on this hopeless fuel consumption! No matter what Aston you've got its still going to get stuck in the same traffic jam as the 2cv isn't it?
