Do you know what sort of oil these people were using, Ben? A quick look on Google suggests that there may be problems using mineral-based oil. One site reckons that on a molecular level the ethanol in E10 will stop the oil forming a film over bearings, etc. (I've got no idea whether that might be true, I'm afraid - perhaps that shjould be Sean's homework? ;) ). Another site I found related to trying to run outboard motors on E85, and reckoned mineral oil just wouldn't mix with the stuff. Both sites agreed that decent synthetic oils would solve the problem(s). The fact these failures occurred just after filling up may add to the 'not mixing' theory, as they do sound more like a total lack of oil than the mixture problems you had.

This came up (at length) at the 2cvGB committee meeting. When I take the body off I'll change the fuel lines anyway but apart from that I'm not going to panic.

'incompatible' doesn't mean 'will dissolve instantly'

Bare in mind some of the Belgian racing cars are running on 100% biotethonal and they seem to do just fine with standard carbs.

LPG is the way forward!

Yes that was good to see, didn't know that.
Although it must be different for race cars, constant modifications to suit this and regular rebuilds happening anyway :?:

No idea if this information is correct, but if it is, the regional variations are interesting...

From this site, http://www.kettleclinick.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1375

BP Ethanol added at 5% to unleaded petrol at all sites across the UK. BP Ultimate (super unleaded) does not have Ethanol added, except in the South West of England.
Esso Ethanol is added at 5% to unleaded petrol at most sites in the UK. Esso Super Unleaded petrol does not contain Ethanol, except in the South West of England (Devon & Cornwall)
Shell has repeatedly refused to answer the question. It is therefore an assumption only, that all Shell petrol should be considered to contain 5% Ethanol.
Texaco Ethanol is added at 5% to unleaded petrol. Texaco Super Unleaded petrol does not contain Ethanol.
Total Ethanol is not added to any Total fuel (including standard unleaded petrol). Except in the North West and South East of England.

( Put £45 of Total cooking grade unleaded in the old Dyane today, filling up the 'reserve' tank as well as the main. ;) )

Interesting, Ken ,off 2cv topic but i put this on a couple of scooter forums, one of the responses so far on the lambretta club GB site so hope it sort of explains why i may come across as a bit of a doom merchant about it on here :)

"The only time I used shell when coming back from the I O W this year resulted in seized piston on my SX200 std set up about 6 miles after filling, I was only doing 50 mph at the time, resulting in being recovered home, correct 2/stroke mix used and when opening float bowl was definately fuel with oil in there.
Will never use it again. :( "

A follow up article from some transport minister in the same paper (metro) today says that we won't be moving to E10 anytime soon in the UK as it's still under heavy consultation.
Just in case Sean was worrying ,like :D
