Ham fisted fiddlers?
Me?
I wouldn't wantto do it engine runs fine as it is, i just am askinG how to use a strobe?!

I thought you turned the engine clockwise (left to right on the 14mm socket? To find the 8th tooth?
Thought retardation was o the right and advance tothe left of that peg in a hole mark? (left as the flywheel sits still)

mark is 8* before tdc so anything to the right of the mark is more advanced anything left is less advanced (for 3 teeth),then retarded .

mark the pegged flywheel next to the LHS engine stud and the 7th tooth is to the right under the starter nose

or print off and stick to the cornflakes packet and secure to the nose of the crank

I understand
I'm sure I'm getting anti clockwise and clockwise muddled. Are you facing front to back when you say L and R
So,
Your standing at the front of the car facing backwards. The marks are anti clockwise of the peg mark
I think I have sussed it, you turn the flywheel clockwise but the mark is
Anti Clockwise. Well mine are,
Makes sense to me now  sorry
I need to acetone the marks ofthe flywheel
Right I'll have a go soon :)

Post Re: Servicing an A series
right
went and had a play, did what you said sean (after removing the marks previously there) re marked correctly, and the marks where same place as id rubbed off,
I know understand where I was confused
My brain is stupid and works in stupid ways, the way I imagined it is the way it was done, which is different to yours, and brings out the marks in the same place, im not going to explain because that would take too long
anyway

http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af3 ... d46616.mp4

that aside and all stupidity dealt with heres a piss poor video to accompany
sorry as per usual guys  thanks for pointing me in the right direction

one day ill grow a brain :(

edit

incidently, so that marks that i marked to use the strobe with, the one that lines up with the mark on the stud on the engine, is also the mark I use when setting with a test lamp, there are 3 marks on the flywheel, the middle is to be ignored in that video ;)

so all in all both methods work, its pretty much spot on as you can see

its not stupid and there is nowt wrong with your brain

all looks fine to me and to be honest to get the flywheel marked like that you'd have to have done the same as anyone else - peg the flywheel mark it next to the bellhousing count round 7 teeth and mark No7

start the engine , rev it and watch the max advance at 7th tooth move out from under the starter to align with the bellhousing mark

seems a nice stable mark and shows a nice smooth advance so alls working well
:D

Post Re: Servicing an A series
yes,

confusion was,
well I marked the peg hole whilst it was under starter and counted 7 teeth to the left, which gave the other mark, turns out if the other marks lines up with the bell housing and move 7 to the right its the same
thats where it went confusing for me

anyway yes its spot on so from now on I do test lamp to set the timing with, and check with strobe, and adjust as neccasary

lamp seems to be spot on
