Joolz,
you'd done such a neat, almost surgical, job of slicing the piston in half that it took me a while to realise just what I was looking at...
Is that the end of the crankshaft, or can the little end bush be replaced and off you go again?

I've got to sort out the cam chain on my son's XL125 before selling it, very tempted to use the 'redneck' trick shown on Youtube to save time.

Me too! I particularly like the fact you cut the rings in half as well :)

You should know to expect nothing less from me  . The engine had been in that condition for about 12 years, because I couldn't think of a way to dismantle it without destroying the piston, which was scuffed but just about usable. It somehow felt like destroying it neatly wasn't so bad. Getting a new con-rod kit fitted should be about £50-60, but I'm watching ebay for a spare crank. I might also ask the machine shop about fitting a new bush, but never gone that route before.

Cam-chain trick? link?

Joolz,
part 1, where he does it the correct way, but mentions the redneck move right at the end...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CvDcVfgS78

Part 2, where he gives the lowdown on the shortcut...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bAJufZn ... re=related

Reckon I'd better do it right, as the bike's going to be sold.

Feeling paranoid: couple of young guys in a pimped-up Astra, dressed in adidas, gold chains, gold teeth etc, just knocked on the door and asked if I'd sell them my 2CV "cos me dad collects em, like." Expect they'll be back.

I'd make sure that it's well immobilised if I were you. ;)
