It's hard to remember exactly what problems we had when, it was all a bit of a blur. I'm mostly going by the drops on the graph.

Simon's car has the coil mounted above the gearbox and it wasn't disturbed throughout the race, we didn't notice it being wet at any time but I suppose it's something to be aware of next time.

Sean,
I reckon that's something of an understatement, as the perishing things allow water which has got through the air filter to get into the float bowls, causing a serious misfire.
Afaik, that's not possible with Solex carbs, or if it is, I've never seen it happen.

At last year's event, I had to dismantle the carb to remove the water from the float bowl, then wasn't too happy when one of the other teams mentioned that it was a known problem and they carried a small syringe to remove the water without dismantling the carb.
That sort of knowledge really should be open source...

As regards the variation in jets mentioned by Simon, the set as supplied to Mike Fox by the Race Club gave less than 20mpg in practice, so he asked for replacements.
These had been soldered up and re-drilled, which seems odd when one of the arguments for using a Weber carb was that jets were easier to obtain for them than for Solex carbs. :?

the webber carb seems to suffer when wet too so perhaps it was just the heavy dew?

Joolz is quite right our coil sits on the gearbox well out of the way - well of anything, never had problems with it getting wet, this year or last year! Having spoke to quite a few people up and down the pit lane a lot of people were saying they had 'carb icing' I do think that we will be making/running with some sort of air filter 'water' guard for next season, once we have sorted the weber out  When travel with the car on the trailer we always cover the carb with a bag and also have a tarpaulin that sits on the edge of the wings which the bonnet holds in place to stop all the road spray of the back of the motorhome.

As for the jets, there does seem to be a bit of a difference between our carbs, having had a few long conversations with weber over the last few days, it does seem that our new engine was running very lean in top gear, which if we had an AFR gauge fitted to the car we would have seen! something for next season.............................. The race car will over the next few weeks be on the rolling road, with the Weber info input, this should give us some more useful information

The car first came into the pits after the towback about 21:40 (according to my FB updates). The first engine swap wasn't too long after that, was it? Weather was dry at that point. Car had been back out for a while by 22:22, with new engine in place.

Max/Min temperatures for Norfolk that weekend were:

Saturday: High = 18º; Low = 12º
Sunday: High = 19º; Low = 11º

[c.f. http://uk.weather.com/weather/almanacMonthly-Norfolk-UKXX1883]

Maybe next year we should keep a record for ourselves of what happened when.

I'm really going to miss doing the 24hr this year. I've considered volunteering for another team but it'll only be disappointing after two years of lumaca.
