I cant offer you technical help on this as I have never had this problem. However willing to work with you on it. Hopefully some folk here might give you the info.

Beyond that, I have got the big socket (cant remember the size....but its the correct one) and bar on a 3/4 inch drive and with a big bit of bar to extend that. As you are just down the road, you would be very welcome to borrow that if you wanted to.

Thanks Squeeze, luckily Phil Sayers has very kindly lent me a breaker bar, socket and section of scaffold pole for extra haul However my mechanical skills are probably sub Technic Lego level, so you are welcome to come round and have a laugh when I cock it all up

I have soaked my brake adjuster nuts again over night in Duck Oil, in the hope that I can ease them off. Then, if I can get the time I'll have a go at the hub nut.

Chock under suspension arm. Undo peening with hammer and screwdriver, be gentle. Attach one breaker bar with scaffold pole to hub nut, kindly on loan from Phil Sayers (thanks Phil).



Apply some beefcake to one end. A noise like Mr Bean clearing his throat ensues, then its free. Wiggle hub from side to side.
Then observe crust and brake pads (?) fall away.



So it looks like the brakes have been like this for many years, do I assume the other side will be the same condition. Looks like I need to refurb things in the brake department.

So brake works continue very slowly as I’m getting little time to get stuck in.

The shoes, eccentrics (thanks for the 23mm socket John) and other gubbins have been stripped off. The cylinder will be next. I finally managed to get the brake adjusters to rotate a little. Can the brake adjusters be replaced without replacing the whole backplate? If not, I will have to keep working on loosening them up.



Over to offside, here you can seen the backplate is dark with what I guess is leaked LHM.



Looking at the suspension arm where the brake pipe runs, things look rather different on this side of the car. Rather than a contiuous pipe there are a couple of joins and cable tie, looks a bit more home made.



I have made a start on taking the hub off on the offside. Hub nut came off fine but the hub is not coming off as I assume the shoe linings are standing fast on this side of the car. I will hunt around the garage for something to fabricate into a hub puller. A crowbar I presume would damage the hub/backplate?

Ben I'm not sure whether the stuck flywheel outboard trick would work, ie - tough screwdriver prising it off and a sharp hit to the thread the nut goes on
Someone confirm first please !!!!!

Did a little prising which makes the backplate flex, I think if I give it too much pressure it may crack

Have you got any scrap wheels hanging about?
Weld a nut to the middle of the back of the wheel, bolt the wheel in place as normal, wind a long bolt into the nut you've just welded in place to draw the drum off.

you could also use the nut that holds the hubcap on
then a long bolt to pull the drum off

I have Lenny but its bolloxed in the middle, i mean totally smashed in, so nowhere to weld a nut to. Don't have a welder either


That sounds like a neat idea Tom, I'll take the standard nut to my local DIY shop and see if I can get a supersized one.
