That would have to have been a looooong time ago, and surely he would/should have noticed that he got it with, no V5 or a V5 showing a different reg no. I guess if he's never had it on the road then he could have been sold it with an old, invalid copy of the V5 showing the original number. Whatever, if the DVLA have officially transferred the plate to something else(and they have because it's on their database) then the Moggy will have been issued with a different age related plate, the seller's just is not aware of it.
