Bob Monkhouse

Just been watching 1/30 minute programme about above. All the usual adoring suspects were making their contribtion to this programme earning their gold. BUT did he ever make you laugh so much that you cried like tommy cooper laurel and hardy john cleese etc etc. NO. Is this a case of smoothness over talent?

I agree, I know humour, like music, film and so on are all a matter for the individual to decide upon, but I can't really say he was one of the greats.

Can't say I'm comfortable with dissing dead people, but I found him a bit smarmy.

Funny thing this. In the 70's I hated Tommy Cooper and Norman Wisdom. I just didn't see how slapstick was funny. Bob Monkhouse was smarmy, and Bernard manning was crude.

Now Tommy cooper has me in tears, Norman Wisdom's Pitkin films give me a nostalgia fix, while Monkhouse and Manning display a cleverness that today's comedians just don't have.
I don't know if it's the times that have changed or just me, but when I see Russel Kane or Julian Clary on screen I long for the cleverness of those old timers.

The craft of the job has gone, those old guys learned their craft, which is what made them funny.

Now this "funny" thing is really funny. I know inside my head what makes makes me angry. The multitude of publc injustice......crooked politicians bankers bonuses(and our complicity in the system that promotes corruption) the illegal war.......i could go on and on. I know what enrages me and why.......the oap beaten to a pulp(you've seen the pictures) by some scumbag thief that gets a few months behind bars and then our money for "rehabilitation". Inside my head i know what makes me sad......the child left asleep in a push chair next to a fire....the ferry overturned in the channel coz someone hadn't closed the loading doors....and many more things. I know inside me about fear jealousy courage, about the wonder of reading a good book about the many good and inspiring things that make me feel good. I can understand these things. BUT it's really funny I don't know inside what it is that makes me laugh and cry at the same time. What is it about Tommy Cooper that makes me smile and laugh just thinking about him. Same with Goon Show, Pythons, Fawlty Towers. Yeah this funny thing is really funny.

Holy mother forgive me because i am about to sin by telling a joke on this forum......................

How long have you been feeling like this?
Well its been going on for a few months.
No other symptons?
No doctor.
Well it is not unusual and we do have a treatment that should make you feel better. I shall give you a months supply of testosterone tablets that will improve your body balance. Come back in a months time and let me know how you are.
A month later
And how are you feeling now?
Much better doctor
Good very good. And any side effects from the medicine?

Oh nothing to worry about that is normal and will settle down in time.
Oh thank you doctor

Is there a link between your joke and 'pubic injustice' from your previous post?

I think I've found a kindred spirit on the Jeep forum. This is a genuine question posted by a first time visitor to the forum. Below that - is his reply. Maybe we're related? :P

"So, my boyfriend bought a '96 Cherokee (XJ) SE, for way too much, like around $3,000. It broke down and he has put another $2,500 in it and totally rebuilt the engine and did a lot of after market work on it. He has and will do all the labor himself, he refuses to pay for labor. Now, he finds out that the motor needs to be taken back out and fixed again and is looking at another $700. I said he should just sell it and wipe his hands clean, he says he won't make enough.

Firstly, what is your guys' opinion on what he should do? Secondly, how much do you think he could make parting it versus just the whole car as is?

Thanks for your guys' opinions!"

And now for the reply:

You want my opinion? Ok…

Shut the hell up. You’re not his wife. You’re not paying for the repairs. It’s absolutely none of your business what he does with his Jeep or his money. I know your type well… first it’s “Sell the Jeep because it’s costing too much money.” Then it’s “No, you can’t go spend the weekend with your buddies because I need you to take me shopping.” Then it’s “Oh gee, honey… I’m pregnant. Gosh, I have no idea how that happened.”

You’re a DreamKiller. You kill a guy’s dreams, take away his future, tie him down with a fat mortgage and too many babies, and turn him into just another miserable guy wondering, “How the hell did I get here?”

Do you really want to help him? Here’s what you do… go to your local library (it’s a big building with books inside) and check out a couple of books on rebuilding engines. Read them, over and over, until YOU understand what needs to be done. Then help him get that engine out and rebuild it. Tie your hair back in a ponytail, put on some old jeans and get your hands dirty. Hand him wrenches, hold the light, pull the wire connectors apart, help him get the hood off… help him with anything he needs. When he gets tired, run inside and make him a hot lunch or dinner. Fix him coffee, hot chocolate, whatever he wants. (But NO beer. Beer is for when the job is done.)

Then when the day is over and you’re both exhausted from working on the engine, push him into a hot shower and jump in with him. Scrub his back, wash his hair, rinse him off, and dry him with fluffy towels still hot from the dryer. Then push him into bed and screw his ears off. Then get up the next day and do it all over again.

Make him realize that rebuilding an engine is a slow and methodical process. Make him realize that every step should be regarded as surgery; every step must be perfect… perfect torque, perfect fit, perfectly clean. If you run into a step that you just can’t figure out, ask for help from someone who knows what he’s doing. Are you cute? Put on a low-cut top, show some cleavage and go (by yourself) to the local Jeep shop, and explain to the guys that you are helping your boyfriend to rebuild his engine and neither of you can figure out this one little step, and do they have any advice…

Think it won’t work? Think again. We guys love to help cute girls, even if they have a boyfriend. (Hey, maybe you’ve got a sister, or girlfriend…)

But absolutely DO NOT whine or complain. Do not say a single negative thing. Not a single “Oooooo, I broke a nail.” If you break a nail, or cut your finger, or bang a knuckle, you just shut up and DEAL WITH IT. You should be a hopelessly optimistic, never-say-die cheerleader, encouraging him every step of the way.

That’s my opinion.

Love it! All of a sudden I don't feel so grumpy anymore 8-)

That's an amusing and witty bit of writing, but you'd have to be a complete twat to actually hit the submit button and send it to a real person..!

Post Re: The O/T thread!
I know we've banged on about it here for a while now, but the current high prices we're seeing for 2cvs have got me thinking. I will *never* be able to afford another 2cv. At least not anything I could jump into and drive. I currently have one 2cv, the red one I'm trying to fit that BMW engine into. I also have that yellow one in my parents garage that I still can't be bothered with (it's 90 miles away). Part of me thinks I should MOT the yellow one, sell it and buy something I want.

My worry is that without that car, sooner or later the red car will be scrap and/or written off, and I won't have one any more. What then? I can't just go out and buy one, I just dont have that kind of money sitting about. It's like staying with a bird you don't like 'cause you're scared of being single.

As much as I've moaned about people cashing in on them, I'm now thinking "There's potentially £3000 in the garage, why not have a slice of the action?".

The last two 2cvs I bought were both scrap when I bought them and tarted up quickly to be used as everyday cars, I'm sure there might be a few more rotten or bent piles of shit out there waiting to be stumbled upon and bodged back onto the road but it's obviously not the common occurance it once was and both these cars were bought mainly because the opportunity was there, not because I really wanted them, espescially in the case of the Bamboo.

Obviously both those cars, had they been sold on eBay or 2CVTV would have gone for £500+ because people think that's what rotten shite is worth nowadays. (that manky pink P.O.S. with mould and rust all over it went for £800. £800!! My W123 was only £750, and that didn't need an assload of work before it was possible to use it)

Where are these meandering rambling thoughts heading? Well, I don't know. I've got the pox in a massive way with things this winter. I wonder whether I should accept things have changed, yeah it's all very sad etc and just make some cash out of the whole affair.
