Post Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
the price debate:

1 factor ive learnt from working in a garage fixing up the new stuff is that all the new cars (not just citroens, but the lot) are now almost getting unfixable with out lots of very expensive electric gizmos, (the c-5 2.2 hdi and its dreaded elloys filter being the best example), none of these cars I think are going to be here in 20 years, the econmics of it just dont make sense, even now c-5's are begining to drop like flies due to this. 2cv's and other early cars do have the advantage you are not a slave to the main agents, yeah they might be a bit more primative than modern stuff, but using one everyday (as i have often done, on a cx at the sec while the dyanes fixed) and i prefer themto new german alike things, but something in me does not mind paying more for a old car that i know I can at least have a go of fixing myself as opposed to a computirised box. If I crash I die, I drive carefully and hope fate is with me.

sorry im wondering in my conversation, but the point i think im trying to make that a 8 grand car (which is a bit ott for my taste, i think 4-5 for a sorted one is ok) is better value than a box of microchips that you have no control over

sorry rant over

Any vehicle is designed to last only a few years, otherwise of course the makers would go out of business. The use of old technology meant that things were more 'fixable', which allowed old vehicles amongst other things to soldier on, thus chipping into the manufacturers profits.

I think today's vehicles are very good, but the manufacturers have now perfected design obsolescence to such a degree that vehicles are now viewed as disposable items. Long production runs are frowned upon, minor design or technical changes each year ensure no huge stock of interchangable parts from which to draw on.

Good for manufacturers, bad for consumers. But then you didn't think that manufacturers produced stuff because they liked us now did you?

Post Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
I bought my current 2CV in April 2002 for £460 with some T&T, it was seriously rough looking, with a mismatched bonnet off a Blue/Cream "one of those", a badly brush painted boot in beige, fitted with a bolted on boot rack and a fair bit of rust-especially round the wind-screen and rear-end. The one thing that drew me to it, was the fact it was sat on a galvanised chassis, so essentially I bought a galv. chassis and had a car thrown in for free.

Back in 2007 I had a decision to make:- Find a better shell/car, or restore the original. The former would have been the easy route, but I took it upon myself to restore the shell and stop another 2CV from vanishing from our roads. I took out a £4000 loan and got a local retired specialist to rip the car apart and over the course of December '07 - April '08 the following bits were replaced:-

Full wind-screen surround and wind-screen, complete with rubber.
Both fixed/welded A-panels, complete with rain channel/gutter and lower section of A-post.
Lower section of C-post, both sides.
Repairs to inner rear wings, again, both sides.
The section that the French call "custode panels" that's the section above the rear wings, with the side windows-Both sides.
Rear-lamp panel and boot floor.
Four brand new wings and new front indicator lamps and brand new Valeo headlamps.
There were quite a few other "smaller" jobs included, like a section cut from roof above B-post (the seam had rusted on passenger side) and repaired. I also bought a new front section for the wiring loom, that was fitted.

I spent about £3200 and I'm proud to know I saved a little piece of Classic 20th Century French Motoring from the scrap-man.
