Why would someone living in the UK import a 2CV from Japan?

Why not?

I'm not saying that the actual car is rubbish - just that these prices are unrealistic for what should be, in my opinion, a "cheap car" Yes, I know in France they pay, or at least ask, stupid prices for so called mint 2CV's but I bet there is no history behind this car - has it been re-built, serviced regularly, etc. etc., I tell you I wouldn't part with £8.5K of my hard earned but some bloody yuppy will so good luck to them!

I just don’t get it. Why is it so difficult to accept that some 2cv and so people are ‘’operating’’ on another level. If someone wants to pay 8.000 10.000 or 20.000 pounds, Euros or dollars accept it. We may not agree, fair enough but to call it nonsense or rubbish is not fair. Just because some or majority believes that 2cv should be cheap hippie cars, that doesn’t mean that everybody need to do the same thing. We have discussed before that prices are heading north, well nothing can be done about it, so join in or get off the wagon. The cheap 2cv’s will never come back as the car is now a classis like many other cars before it.

I'm sorry Viking but a quick scan of Ebay and other sites in the UK reveals that there are still plenty of sub £2000 - E2500 - cars around/ Likewise there are an awful lot of "proper" cars around under that level that could also be considered classics - MG's, MX5 etc.
The fact that a few people are misguided enough to believe the hype that there is a groundswell of opinion that prices are going up to such an extent that they can command high 4 figure sums for what maybe a very nice car, is still, an unrealistic price for something that needs to be tinkered with, cant be touched by a normal garage and will rust as soon as you turn your back for 10 minutes, nonsense.

We all have our belief and opinions. I’m not saying that yours are wrong, you are naturally ‘’entitled’’ to believe whatever you think. My belief is that, if you look only inside the square, one miss the complete picture. Ebay and other car sales sites are only advertising cars for sale. If a 2cv is way ‘’too expensive’’ compared against the condition it may not sell at the advertised price but it will eventually sell.
To compare 2cv’s to other cars (classis) is not possible. At the end of the day we are not buying cars but ideas. The car is only hopefully fulfilling your idea. The question is how much are one prepared to pay for this idea. Obviously some will/can pay up to 40.000 AU dollars for a 2cv. Not something that I would ever do but if I had the money and couldn’t repair 2cv’s I may have. You may say that ‘’ some few people’’ are misguided about market prices, maybe yes maybe no. Rip off merchants are everywhere but we can't deny that prices are rising, whether we like it or not.
Don’t believe for a second that this Japanese 2cv is overpriced if the condition matches the description, I would happily recommend buying it should anybody ask me to inspect and valuate the 2cv.

I think another way of putting it is that a 'high value' standard 2cv is an object that has become contrary to its original intention. It does happen though, just like the Dutch paid fortunes for mere tulip bulbs in the 17th Century, but when such things happen they appear very strange.

The 2cv has become a commodity, how sad. :(

Well said Old Nail - that is really what I am trying to say.....clearly value is in the eye of the beholder but a would think the bulk of us "fanatics" would never value our beloved rust buckets other than a means to an end rather than an object of speculation and certainly not an investment.

I don't normally bother to get into this debate but, here goes.......

From my perspective, there's no new car I like out there and if I had the money to spend, I'd love an as new or at least a very good 2CV, so yes, I would spend 9k on a really bloody good one.

Maybe I'm bonkers but hey, that's me.

Sure, I rue the fact that I don't get offered a 2CV a week now for free or £50 but hey, c'est la vie.

I'm sure there's plenty of other car fanatics out there-the true Beetle fans and proper Mini fans for example (most of my mates had Minis when they passed their tests as they could be had for £150 with 12 months test, what's the cheapest MOTd Mini anybody has seen recently?) that feel the same way-this happens. And, it'll continue to happen, there's fuck all we can do about it!

True, there'll also be twats out there with proper shit bags (we know of a good source of those) who'll keep on asking stupid money for them. They'll keep selling them too unfortunately. But, once again, there's nowt anyone here can do about it.

As has been said many times before, people can put a daft price on something but at the end of the day, it's worth what someone's willing to pay-whether that's £800 or £8000, so be it.

I also believe that the "2CV is a cheap mode of transport to get us from A-B" is a complete load of bollocks for the majority now!

Okay, so there may be an awful lot of people on here that use their A-series on a regular basis (some of you, I know, only have A-series) but, there's probably more that only use them occasionally when they feel like it, not because they have to.

So, on that basis, what makes 2CVs different to any other perceived classic? The majority of 2CV owners (certainly in the UK anyway) seem to only bring them out for high days and holidays, tuck them away in the winter and so on.

Whether people like it or not, that sort of thing just makes people think "they're rare now" and bump the price up-having a tantrum about it isn't going to make any difference to the prices folk put on their 2CVs!

I've waffled long enough now so, dig in and shoot me down! ;)

Edit: That's not to say that I think 2CVs should be priced that highly but I do believe that there are some that would be worth that sort of money...... If I think what I've spent on some proper basket cases (not to mention the man hours to get them road legal) and even then, they still look like scrapyard fodder...............
