He is plain wrong. As you say it violates the first law of thermodynamics; the process ends and stops in the same thermodynamic state.

There have been lots of claims and patents over the years claiming to have made it work. I believe a few of the inventors have had their collar felt for fraud too

I seem to recall a story of a hamster in a wheel at the bottom of the machine, and the judicators became suspicious when it needed a kick to get it going again.

But he was actually saying you could just use a little of the energy from the engine to generate sufficient energy to keep the electrolysis going, and use all the rest of the energy to drive a car. First law of thermodynamics - perpetual motion??

Am I missing something obvious, or is he just wrong? :?

guessing the chemistry teacher is one of the unemployed bankers that the present bunch in Westminster decided to fast track in a couple of weeks

if it were possible it'd have been done

as the reaction of the hydrogen and oxygen is exothermic some energy is lost out of the reaction

that has to be put back,

as an internal combustion engine isnt the most efficient and than only a tiny ammount is then taken off for making electricity there wont be that much electricity available for the splitting of the hydrogen bond in water( one of the strongest bonds in chemistry)

its all to do with the dutch bloke

so he is either trying to ge you lot working it all out for yourselves or he is really thick and shouldnt be teaching much more than supervising the sandpit in the local primary
probably the former which makes you the thick one for not working it out ;)

This clipping from the Wiki page on water powered cars sums it up quite nicely...

"Since the combustion step is the exact reverse of the electrolysis step, the energy released in combustion exactly equals the energy consumed in the electrolysis step, and—even assuming 100% efficiency—there would be no energy left over to power the car"

C) He's talking crap and sneaking down there when James isn't watching and puts the chemicals in that he NEEDS to to produce this lovely clear perfect running bio-diesel?

Just a thought.

Not sure where to put this, I didn't think it justified it's own thread so it's going here.

I want/wanted to get some wheels powder coated, I've just got a quote of £35 each (£175 for a set of 5) is that a fair price? the place does look quite professional(read 'dear'), I was hoping it'd be under £100. At that price, a quick going over with the rattle can and £150 in my pocket is looking very attractive.

I'd have thought £20 a wheel for blast and powdercoat is nearer the mark on a steel wheel.

£25-£35 for blast, zinc prime and powdercoat is roughly what I'd expect.

Thanks, I may try some other places, but I've certainly lost some enthusiasm for the idea. Shame, in my head they were looking pretty mint!
