out of interest,
why was the traction avant the frist wheel drive car, i can only assume the technology was around until then, is that what held front wheel drive back? the lack of ability to get drive to wheels that need to turn?

Traction avant wasn't the first fwd car was it? Morgans?

Making wheels turn, go up and down and go round is relatively difficult, and from a time when men were men and women were simply grateful fwd was thought to be the way of the feeble. Much like nowadays men wear moisturiser and 'hair products' it's now openly acceptable to have cars that are front wheel drive.

Wearing lipstick is still frowned upon however; even in a masculine FWD environment

There are various claimants. BSA made the first that was any kind of mass production, but FWD cars were experimented with as far back almost as the birth of the car. Miller, Cord made models too.

Ah: the qualifier... "...the first that was any kind of mass production." We are now more sharply defining the discussion goal posts - but that's fine!
