Post Re: The O/T thread!
Just finished making my wedding ring:
Image

It started off as a 1918 Florin (pre-1920 UK 'silver' coins are actually sterling silver), and, in a nutshell, I've just tapped around the edge very gently with a small hammer (lots!) and then cut out the middle. I had my first go with a 1946 coin, which is 50% silver, 50% cupronickel, and apart from making it the wrong size, was fairly quickly reminded I'm allergic to nickel! I then had another go, again with '40s coin, to get the sizing right, before tackling the real thing. So, 8 months after deciding to do it, I've finally got a ring which fits, and hopefully won't cause a ring of strange blisters on my finger!

basically the coin was stood on it's edge, on a small anvil, and very gently tapped all around its circumference with a small hammer. I used a panel beating hammer and D*lly. As you tap it, the edge very slowly starts to become 'mushroomed' all the way around - like the end of a kingpin drift gets! Keep going until the edge is wide enough, and the diameter of the ring/coin is small enough. You can just see in the photo that the writing around the circumference of the coin has ended up inside the ring, if that makes it any easier to work out what's happened.

There are a few websites out there about it which explain better than I can. Apparently it was popular among US sailors in the war.

Cheers for the reply a page back, Old Nail; I can't wait for your book!
