I've often wondered why people with Torrets syndrome only shout out swear words? I wonder if we told them that 'cake' was an offensive word they would manage to shout that out a lot too? Or 'sugar', or while I'm at it 'baking'.

Sugar - sugar - sugar.... C-A-K-E!

(I mean....who 'often wonders' about that stuff anyway... except me?) It appears to be past Old-nails bedtime. "Bakers - the lot of you""

I've wondered that too, but from what I understand it NOT only swear words they shout, but that's what 'the media' like to portray the most. I assume, because it's hilarious.

People who suffer Tourette syndrome also tend to scratch their bollocks(unless they are women, of course  ).

OOOOOOO!! BOLLOCKS!!! I think I've found a slight oversight in the swear filter.

PS:-Involuntary swearing is called Coprolalia :geek:

Your musical kit sounds like fun, rebel! My Yamaha is a Pacifica, too. It's great, but it just looks too... clean! Mind you, it's not as clean as the beautiful American-built Strat that a pro musician kindly allowed me to play as an improptu open-mic slot at a party in a pub a few years ago. A rather excited young lady (well, she was under 40) took it upon herself to pour a pint of beer over my head whilst I made a dreadful din with this posh Stat round my neck. Major Strop ensued (and no, Major Strop wasn't in Dad's Army).

That's really quite scary, 2CViking - a lot worse than I ever thought it would be.

I'd love to hear of examples of how your 'friends' and family reckoned you no longer fitted in.

At this risk of being really controversial, I have to say I think our own country is a pretty nifty place to live (Old Nail - you may need to clean up your monitor screen after that one.) Ok, I have been pretty lucky regarding where I've lived, although I did have a 3-year stint near t'Elephant & Castle which was about three years too long (actually not toooo bad, although the school I did my teaching practice in was a bit scary :( ).

Yes, there are some serious a****ole places with some serious a****oles living in them, but you will also find the nicest, most decent, funniest, wittiest, drollest, driest, and generally easy-goingest people in this country, I think. This forum seems to represent a good cross-section.

In short if possible, the subject is somewhat more complicated. Leaving Denmark at 25 going to Melbourne (lived in Queensland and Perth too) started my stupid nightmare of I trying to change Australia in to Denmark (didn’t really liked Australia). After 10 years of complaining just like the pommes down under, someone told me to f………k off, this is Australia, not Denmark. Then I realized that I was the problem and began to understand, accept and adapt to Australia. Some years later I’ve learned to be far more tolerant of people from all over the world, different religions, back grounds and so on. Learned to accept people for what they were and not what I wanted them to be. I became more Australian if you like, easy going maybe not enough. A family member past away and I found myself, wife and 2 kids back in Copenhagen with my Aussie attitude, not arriving on time, defending the foreigners, not worrying about stupid little things that most others did etc etc. Another characteristic the Aussie have is. Have your say, speak your mind even if you offend someone and come good 5 mins later (in most cases) Have you complains and move on in other words. I feel that my generation in Denmark can’t forgive or forget (tall puppy syndrome) if you more or less step outside the line. Many tried to push me back in to the tiny box where most Danes are and that I couldn’t or didn’t want. Again I was told to bugger off, didn’t fit in any longer. Yes they were correct, so back to Perth for another nearly 10 years. I really felt at home for the first time as an adult but remarried, France was calling with our 2cv business opportunity and here we are. No worries so far, love France but when we made our millions, retirement in Australia looks very appealing in 10-15 years time. Couldn’t never live in Denmark again, they feel that I left them, left the community and no longer contributing to the broader common goal. I feel that the Danes have an ambivalent relationship with Danes living away from the pond. We can’t be placed in a comfortable box where one is easily understood. We too are becoming strangers just like the foreigners. Time to stop.

That is perfect, and the best advice they could have given you as it made you stop and think. In the UK today you would be arrested and criminalised for giving such advice.

Again, spot on. Unfortunately there are now large groups of people who make it their life's work to take offence for any real or imaginary slight, often taking offence on behalf of someone who wasn't offended in the first place. In the end we have reached a situation here where the tail wags the dog, so I'm very glad to hear that France still has some appeal as that's where I'm going.

Not sure France is quite the beacon of tranquillity that we think it is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_civil ... _in_France

Perhaps the feeling of being comfortable in your skin, finding your place in the world, or whatever one calls it, is more to do with one's age than with where one lives. (Arthur Seaton eventually stopped being an angry young man, remember, and he stayed in Nottingham! ;) ) Of course, it helps if there are nice views, and the bread's good, and the beer is nice, and the women are pretty, and the... hmm, maybe France IS the place to be!

You'll find num-nuts everywhere no matter where you go. Rual France is for me a pretty place with plenty of ''old fashion'' old polite people. Even the youngster er polite towards the elderly. Weather is good, still four seasons, food and lifestyle fantastic but sadly more and more are loosing the french way of living. The American ilussion is here too. Yes age is a good thing, at 50 one pretty much have sortet out what life is about. My french wife's motto is
Get it while you can so I do where possible
