Putting another engine on the bench and rebuilding it at lesiure would be my preference in the same situation, no rush, as the car still goes now, but then you learn stuff as you go too.

I've done my share of trying to get an engine back together so you can use the car to get to work in the next day and it nearly always ends with you grovelling around in the gutter, in the rain, at ten o'clock on a Sunday night. far more fun to get an engine built then just drop it in and repair the old one at your leisure.

I would be sad enough to drop any old engine in and rebuild the original engine, but that's just me  Anyway, my 2cv's engine has only done 194,000miles, so with luck it'll be a long time before I need to think about a rebuild.

Nice idea, but I think finding the original engine would be the tricky bit!
