1987 (was) Road legal racer but soon to be winter hack!

Post Re: 1988 Road legal racer
I used it for work yesterday as it was the only car I could "extract" (didn't think it would be very polite to use my friends Polo that was blocking the drive waiting for cambelts) and the fuel gauge worked when I filled it up! :D

And then promptly stopped work again on my way from work to the stables.

I hate fuel gauges! So, for the time being, I shall be using "Plan B" which isn't just a crap "band" that's seemingly being played on Radio 1 all the time but is actually the trip mileage recorder on my (GS) speedo. :geek:

Perhaps I should also fill my petrol can back up too..............

Can you use your scrapyard hunting skills and find something on a modern car that'd be a way round the problem?

I'm gonna have to use my ever so limited "putting my hand in my pocket" skills and buy one off Uncle Roy I think. :(

Still, not the end of the world I guess. I'm gonna sort the dampers out first, thanks to the aforementioned Polo, the shocks are (hopefully) off back to Avo this week for refurbishment. 8-)

That might not have been the only problem of course... Took mine apart over the weekend and did Ken's trick of soldering up the hole which had been worn in the "wiper" inside the sender. Also "adjusted" (bent!) it very slightly so that it was pressing against the wire a bit harder. Wasn't too difficult, the only annoying thing was, after putting it all back together, fitting the tank back on the car and settling down with a beer, I noticed the filter which is supposed to be on the end of the pickup, on the table! Still, it was very clean, and I've got an inline filter as well, which has also stayed clean, so I think it can wait a while!

Nothing really to "report" about her really other than that she's been sat in my garage doing nothing now for nearly 4 weeks! I really should use her more often but the versatility of the XM or the BX or even the Discovery makes the racer fairly redundant in day to day life.

However, as I went to shut the driveway gates behind Simon yesterday, they broke-meaning that it's really awkward to open them and get either the BX or XM off the drive. Hmmmmm, she *may* have to be pushed into going to the DIY shop service today.............

Anyway, in other news. Well, there is no other news really aside from the fact that I eventually got round to sending my AVO adjustable dampers off to AVO to be reconditioned. One week and £83 later, they were sat on my doorstep with new mount bushes, dust covers etc etc and, most importantly, the ability to damp again!!

I'd love to get them fitted onto her but I'm keeping them off for the time being as they're coming to Snetterton as our spares for the 24 hour-just in case an' all that.

Speaking of Snet, I've been tasked with the job of building an engine for Snet so, assuming it all goes to plan, Myrtle (that is what she's known as in the Spanners household) will be acting as "test bed" for the engine so there may be the occasional (constructive) update on here from time to time.

Don't hold your breath though!!

Myrtle didn't get used as "test bench" in the end. However, she did get used to transport the engine and tools and some crap for Russ down to Simons.

Trying to get an engine into the boot was an epic fail, I thought it would fit but seems I'm just not equipped for thinking! So, it ended up in the car where the passenger would normally sit, it was quite good really, acting as an armrest for the journey down-allbeit a rather sharp one!

I thoroughly enjoyed using her yesterday but I still can't justify keeping her.

So, this little lovely has been sitting at Simons for the last 12 months and generally getting in the way.

However, I've now managed to somehow clear some space on my driveway so it can come back here. Sod knows what I'm gonna do with it but, MOT and some use would be a good start!

On Simons trailer ready for "Operation get it back to Spanners and out of the bloody way!"
