Post Re: My 2cv
Well I've had some vibration on right-hand bends(especially on gradual ones, like on motorways) so it's time to have the front hubs and the kingpins replaced(have had a problem where the trackrod ends bolt to the hubs and had to have them welded on). So I'm going to have the hubs, kingpins and  trackrod ends replaced. The car is booked in to Peter Cross at Tibberton,Worcester, next week. When it goes in for those jobs to be done,I'll have the car serviced and will have the heads torqued up(or is it down?..well tightened then) and have the tappets adjusted as in the words of Peter.."It's very quiet for a 2cv engine". The tappets are too tight. So hopefully it will be a flying machine when I get her back ;)

Cool! what problem did you have that meant the hubs and steering arms welded together?

Where the bolts go into the top of the hub, the thread stripped and the bolts came loose. Was quite scary really, I drove over a section of road which a utility company had resurfaced and it had sunk ever so slightly and the car acted like a dog shaking it's self dry after getting out of water. I drive over that section of road in the 2cv all the time and I can't normally feel it!! I had to have the hubs rethreaded, but it was no good( and yes, it happened to both hubs :? ) The 'fix' has lasted 18 months or so, but as I'm going to Holland and France in May I want to get a proper good job done.

Bloody heck, I dont think I'd have trusted welding, I'd have sooner binned the hubs and done it right the first time! (I'm always a bit dubious as to how brittle weld is). Good to hear it's going to be done right at last, are you taking it on the monster roadtrip to waggel and french national?

I am, can wait!! It's certainly going to be a mammoth voyage, I love driving in France. But I'll need to fit the BX Gti seats before I go, or I'll be coming back a cripple!!

And the most amazing thing is that I welded them with the same welder as the one I tried to do the Racehire cars hubs with at Snet last year to no avail.

In fairness, it wasn't just the weld, the bolts did go in but we were somewhat dubious about them so I took preventative action.

Ok...Daisy has gone into Peter Cross at Tibberton.
It's going to have a service and have the tappets adjusted and heads torqued. Also having new hubs,kingpins,wheel-bearings and trackrod-ends. Took it over about 4.30pm and hopefully will be ready by Saturday.
Just don't ask how much it's going to cost me.....Though I'd rather spend money on a 20 yr old 2cv than on my modern Euro-box.

Got Daisy back now and she's had a full service plus the heads torqued down and the tappets adjusted and timing corrected. But as mentioned in previous post, she's had replacement hubs, new wheel-bearings, kingpins and track-rod ends(steering arms).

What can I say?.....WOW :!: It drives so much better now, more (and freer) power, better handling, more precise steering and smoother ride.

Can't wait for the drive to Holland and France for both their National meetings in May,(Still looking for somebody to hop aboard and share some costs).

Right..I'm off out now for a cruise in the 2cv :D
