This is simply my take on things, not 100% fact:

The D*lly stigma, as Adrian says, was from the old days when most true 2cvers were rolling about in shite old drummers as it was all they could afford, and people started coming to camps in brand new wollies, something most 2cvers could only dream of financally.

So if back in the day the people with too much money and shiny cars were called DollyWollies, nowadays if somebody turns up in a shiney new car, should we call them a CityTwitty?

It is however an incentive for me to rebuild my Mehari and get it up for sale.

Hmm. Don't forget how much you'd be chucking at Cassis to get to that "as new" Mehari...

€2,500 on tupperware
€1,500 on the body frame
€750 on the roof and frame
€400 for seats
€700 for a 'screen and frame
Chassis, engine, gearbox, suspension, electrics...

(and the problem with Meharis is that to ask that kind of strong money, you've realistically got to be able to say "All new..." - because the people who are likely to spunk that kind of money at one will expect it)

<looks again at ad>
Yep, he reckons he's spent €20k on it. OK, that includes labour - but if you've got a full stack of Cassis bits there, there's not a lot of that involved.

2CV City have nowt to do with that car. If you start with an incomplete car, like I did with that one, you're pretty much per definition going to end up with something shiny if you're a half decent restorer.

Besides, I like cars that have been sorted properly.

You need to have very straight panels to have a black car, it's the worst possible colour for showing up the slightest imperfection. As 2cv's are usually dimply and denty anyway, black possibly isn't the most natural choice, but does look good on a perfect car. I saw a metallic gunmetal grey one at 2cv City last week, and while it looked ok in an immaculate sort of way, by using metallic paint some of the character of the 2cv was lost somehow.

On the other hand, battered and dented 2CVs look very good in matt black. 8-) :)
