Ok this morning started car but when the clutch pedal was depressed there was almost a scraping/whirring noise.... It happened once a few weeks ago but wasnt as bad as it was today. It seems to be after a long run maybe as last time we were in North Yorkshire it did it after it had been parked up for a few hours and also it hadn't been started since we went to oulton park and back yesterday. It disspears after a few minutes though and I forgot to mention that the clutch was fitted less than 1000 miles.... Any suggestions?

Did you change thrust bearing at the same time? Sounds like that is shot if you didnt...

No it wasn't changed... I'm guessing this means it is an engine out job then? if it is this can the car be used without worrying about destroying the new clutch or should it be left? btw ive just gone and started it again.... its doing it again so im guessing it has got worse...

Describe the sound as accurately as you can James. Does it get louder with the pedal depressed? Stops or still there but quieter with pedal out? If it's the bearing it won't destroy your new clutch.

Right ok my dad just got in and said that it there is a new release bearing on it as it comes as part of the kit when fitting a few clutch... The noise is a metallic rattle only there when the clutch is depressed more than half way. It dissapears once gears are engaged

So could something have been done during the clutch change to make this happen? I'm just scared to even start it now incase I knacker something... I'm gonna have a proper look tomoz but the story so far is...
1. Clutch changed less than 1000 miles ago - Its been great since and a complete clutch was put in not just the plate
2. Abit of a noise happened after a long run to Yorkshire a few weeks ago but it didn't happen again till today
3. the noise is back and isn't going away like it did before. Did about 100 miles yesterday so maybe its something to do with long runs? ive figured out its happened when in all gears with clutch depressed but it goes as soon as foot lifted off.

So could it be simply a new part bedding in? How will adjusting the clutch solve it?

sometimes, there can be a 'whirring' sound just after the clutch pedal is depressed, but this is either a 'dry' spigot bearing in the crankshaft or a worn input shaft bearing in the gearbox.

If the noise continues whilst the pedal is down and there's no chance of it being the release bearing, things may be more serious.

With the engine on tickover, if it slows down appreciably when the clutch pedal is depressed, it might be a good idea to pull the engine and check if the clutch fork 'fingers' have spread.

They could be bearing on the rotating part of the release bearing, leading to both the bearing and the pressure plate being damaged.

That's what happened to Daz's 2CV4 some years back, as I had to carry out the repair...

right its just getting weird now...
after going into town this morning the noise stopped... i just got in and started it... with cluth pedal depressed there is no noise at all, but when you lift your foot off you can hear a slight whirring noise that I didn't notice at first... I'm gonna have a go at adjusting the cable later to see if that makes any difference. Is it possible to have too little play on the cable btw? the clutch seems to be very fierce so could a really really tight cable be bending something like the forks which is resulting in the noise ? I'm probably talking bollocks though I know

definitely worth adjusting the cable, to restore the correct amount of free play at the pedal. About 20mm at the pedal should be OK.
That whirring sound could be the release bearing still contacting the release fingers...

Fwiw, I never bother locking those 2 nuts on the cable, since the return spring on the pedal keeps the 19mm one under tension against the bulkhead.
