I suppose I could try just laying some of the stuff I had in before between and under the seats instead of bolting the seats through it. It might help in the same way that a rug on laminate flooring cuts down noise and I can still lift it again if it starts to harbour moisture. I'll report back!!

I've had umpteen 2cvs with and without the deadener on the inside of the bonnet, and removed it from plenty. No difference. I've never seen a Dyane or Ami with it - despite them being "more luxurious"...

You've seen my Ami, that's got it under the bonnet.

Post Re: Belinda: on the road
Well it looks like I failed with the suspension. It's still groaning and there's a bit of oil on the front ends of both cans so it's still getting out somewhere. The cans were never in the best of condition anyway, so they'll be the next thing on my list to buy. However looking on the bright side, I cut and fitted some thick "rubberised carpet" to fit between the seats and the rest of the floor last night and following my other sound deadening experiments, the car is a bit quieter now so I can hear the suspension groaning while I'm driving

Apart from that I spent the night lubricating my undercarriage followed by a bit of muff action. As the car hasn't really been used in anger for a couple of months I thought I'd look at the knife edges, kingpins etc and get some grease in there.

As for the muff, I've simply slid a piece of thin HD foam behind the grill which should be sufficient. It only needs to restrict the airflow to the engine, right?

Restrict, yes. Not block off completely.

Given that there is quite a bit of room around & under my wings (ie. - not completely enclosed) I should think there'll be enough air getting to the engine. I'm right in thinking that I'm wanting to reduce the amount of chilled air going directly to the fan through the grill right?

Bertie I'm a convert to sound deadening. My car was bloody loud mind, but I drove someone else's car and thought I'd gone deaf! Also for a muff on my 3-bar grille I just used a couple of strips of Baco-foil to restrict air flow like they used to do on most cars in the 1960's.

Bertie, a lot of noise comes frome tire noise resonating in the wings(wings is the right word, isn't it?)
Anyway, here:

If you apply Motip(or another brand ofcourse) Anti Stone Chip there, it doesn't only protect the inside of your wings but is also has a soundproofing effect.

Post Re: Belinda: on the road
Thanks for all your thoughts on sound deadening - it's all stuff I can certainly try.

I'll start off this post by mentioning the "muff" that I made. BAD idea - the fan didn't chew anything but after about 5 miles of driving the engine did start making some horrible smells, so I stopped and ditched the foam.

I got to FF ok and had a marvelous weekend. The new windows work a treat and I was as snug as the proverbial bug.

We had a pretty uneventful journey on the way home to Northallerton on the Sunday and sat on the motorway at between 50-55 all the way, even touching 65 at times.

Each time I take Belinda out now I spend the journey deciding what to attend to next. What I had intended to do next is make the rear of the vehicle more comfortable with proper cushions and some electrics so that I could fit the TV & lighting that's begging to go in.

Although the car is now getting to meetings, I'm not convinced that she getting there as well as she could. The engine just doesn't feel right somehow. It doesn't idle very smoothly, sounds very rattly and just doesn't sound right compared to others I hear when at meetings so given that I have another set of wings and a bonnet to try out, I think the next thing to do is get the old wings off and have a good look at the engine while I've got plenty of access.

I must admit i was pretty jealous when i saw you climbing into the back. Kinda wish i took the van for the weekend.

I still cant understand why it only sits at 50/55mph when my van can sit at 65 easily. I know you have that lump on the roof but it shouldnt slow her down that much?

A TV!? :)
