This advert is probably either too long or too graphic to be shown on UK TV but look at this -

Drive safely this Christmas.

I've seen them all in my time down under. These scare campaigns do not work according to Scandinavian studies. I have never seen them in Denmark and the road death is also on the decline mainly to safer cars + change in attitude regarding drink driving. Australia and England I guess has a bad drinking problem and that is what needs to be dealt with. No matter what you show on TV, people will continue to drink and drive. It is like smoking, it won’t happen to me but everyone else. This one is scary, from down under. IF YOU DRINK AND DRIVE, YOU ARE A BLOODY IDIOT. IF YOU GET HOME YOU ARE A LEGEND.
Meaning avoiding the police.

Not really.

Here in the UK, c.2500 people die on the roads each year. About 400 of those are booze-related - 16%.

If you look at the US, they get through about 40,000 people a year - despite having a population only 5 times that of the UK, so about three times as many per capita - and about twice as high a proportion are booze-related - so you're SIX times more likely to die as a result of drink-driving in the US than the UK.

Hard hitting stuff. We could use some campaigns like this over here. Ours can be quite graphic, but never emotionally engaging in any way, which is why I think they fail.

Our campaigns just seem to target the squeamish, whereas these go for everyone that isn't a complete sociopath (or psychopath?.. i get the two confused... someone who is incapable of emotional empathy anyway).

Everyone knows drinking or taking drugs doesn't go with driving, I fail to see how watching actors who don't know each other pseudo getting upset will alter anything!!??

Just because people know something, doesn't mean they necessarily think about the consequences of their actions. Sometimes a little bit of prompting is all it needs.

Either that or we need to punish drink drivers by summarily executing them.
