 Just a quick one...
Morning. I know there's tumbleweed blowing round these parts this weekend cos everybody is away getting arseholed in a field near Cambridge, but some of us have to work you know. Luckily enough though we have a plasterer coming to do the spare room on Monday so, instead of being forced to go out for the day and enjoy myself sitting in nose-tail bank holiday gridlock, I have the pleasure of a day in the garage putting Mad Cyrils back brakes back together. To do this properly I'm intending to liberate a large torque wrench from work to do the 44mm hub nut up to the correct tightness. So my question is this: What is the correct torque for the rear hub nut? Thanks for listening.

The Haynes book-of-Bollocks states it should be 290 lb/f

I have a one metre long 3/4 drive breaker bar and when tightening said nut apply a reasonable but not enthusiastic pressure on tightening. I alway [and I mean always] fit a new nut. Never had one come off yet.

The reason for 30-35 kg is not to prevent it coming off. Its to get the correct preload on the inner bearings. The outside ring nut front and rear is also 30-35 kg preload on the outside bearing. Same for the drive shaft nuts.

Lenny Citroens own manual states 252-288ftlb 35-40Nm which is pretty much FT with a long breaker Sean

Just tried it out on a car I was working on. Using my trusty 1 metre breaker bar and a Facom socket, I tightened it sensibly. I then checked with my torque wrench and it was 260 ft/lbs [its an old torque wrench and not yet metricated]

I borrowed a monster torque wrench and did them up to 290lbft. Been for a quick spin and everything seems dandy. Ta very much all.
