Post Replacing the windscreen, any tips?
I am about to refit a new windscreen & seal into my 2cv. Last attempt with original screen + new seal appeared to be successful until a horizontal crack appeared after a short journey in the car. I assume the process must have weakened the glass in some way. This is all to stop a leaking screen. Point to note, when the screen was removed the slots either side of the frame recess hadn’t been covered, is this critical? Any advice would be most welcome.

If you haven't bought one already, I suggest buying one from Daras at Retrospec Parts as they're thicker and more resistant to cracks and chips.

I taped over the slots to prevent water ingress. Also spread lots of waxoyl/dinitrol/dynax on the metal wotk, it helps everything slide in.

Samfieldhouse, thanks for your helpful suggestions. I am waiting for the weather to warm up before attempting it. Should be ok to proceed tomorrow. I’ll feed back any progress.

Yes. Those are spot-welder access holes from when the car was built. They need to be covered, otherwise water will pour in.
As Sam mentioned above, (thanks Sam), if you haven't yet got a screen, (& you're near Worthing), I've got one left from a batch of slightly thicker laminated screens that I had made.

Chevrons2 thanks for the input & the screen offer. Unfortunately for 2reasons, I am in Lancashire & already bought the screen from a 2cv specialist along with a seal from the same supplier. It is a slight concern as the new screen is quite a lot thinner than the one I removed.
Seems to me it may not seal as well but surely a specialist supplier wouldn’t sell a part that is doomed to fail by design?
I am committed to trying this & today is fitting day using the cord/string method helped by lubricating the corners, I’ll feed back how it goes.

New screen fitted yesterday, with the help of my glamorous assistant it went like a dream. Done & dusted in less than a hour using a length of garden trimmer line from the inside of the car.
It’s had the hosepipe test which it passed with flying colours, now hopefully it will ok.

I used some kind of black mastic type sealant I found after research. Just to be belts and braces, as it were.

Thanks for the additional advice, using specialist sealant. The windscreen in now so too late for that, hopefully won’t regret not using any.
I’ve ventured out now, once in the rain, so far so good. Eventually I’ll revert to driving without ‘fingers crossed’

Stay away from Franzose in that case.

I have not used any sealant/adhesive when mounting window glass. Because I don't want to deal with that when the time comes for taking it out again for some reason.
Not had a leak so far.

I am also hesitant to use any lube/rust preventing stuff that might cause the rubber to swell. So earlier I've just used diluted washing up liquid, witch have worked fine.
Last time however, I used Red Rubber Grease. It is safe to use with rubber, made the mounting super easy and hopefully, it will have some rust preventing function. And hopefully it will not start running on a hot summer day
