Post 425 TUNING and 6V to 12V alternator
The 18hp 425ccm, is it possible to buy any big bore kits for this engine? Or know of any way to get more power out of it?

How can one add an oilfilter to this engine?

And, anybody know of anybody who has gotten the 6V alternator on an 425 engine, converted to 12V? Wondering if it's doable without spending silly money.

Just doing research on my options if I want to keep the BEAUTIFUL looking 425 in my next project.

Yes, there was a period 500CC bog bore kit by tuning company RAF (not the airforce), but they're super rare.
I think, potentially you can put 602 pistons from an M4 engine on... but I'm not sure. Given they look identical - if you were going to do that, why not just put an M4 in it.
There was an american '425' at the German national last year that had been bored out and developed 35bhp. I'll try and find some pics.
To be honest, just learn to love it, the 18hp is a lovely engine and set up well, you'll get 80kph out of it in a saloon.

There was a 21 hp 425 in the late 60s early 70s. It had the dynamo mounted on the manifold like the ami. What is the problem with 6 volts? Mine runs fine good lighting etc. But you have to have all your connectors well clean.

Because I have two 12 hp and two 18 hp engines laying around, but zero M4's. And given I'm in Norway, old A-model stuff is rare to come by. I've never even seen an M4, but I thought they looke more like the 602 engine.

I know about the RAF set, that's why I know a big bore is possible. From my days as a teenager driving 100ccm motorbikes, getting a 125 ccm kit was always the easiest way to more power, without messing to much with the engine. And that is true for the 602, and I cant see any reason why it shouldnt be true for the 425 either.
Maybe a engine specialist company can bore out the original cylinders and custom make some pistons to fit. But actually, a guy mentioned elsewhere that someone IS doing work to offer a big bore kit for the 425, so I'll wait and see if it becomes available.

Awesome! I'd be happy for some pics.
35hp is a lot.... Myself I'd be happy with 20-something ;)

I might be mistaken but I think somebody on the Snail forum was gonna try to convert a 425 to 602 many years ago, but I dont know how that went.

It looks the part, thats for sure. I honestly havent driven it in normal use, so I dont really know how I will feel about it. 80 is enough, but it wouldn't hurt to keep the 80 when it goes a little upwards also
Even if I find it fast enough, I think it's fun to work on those engines. And it would be even more fun to get some more hp out of it, just because.

Yeah..... You might be right. 6V will do in the beginning at least. But I'm no keep-it-original fanatic. I like the old 2CV's because of how they handle, and the looks. Not only of the body but also of the mechanical parts as the engine, the engine bay and interior. 6 or 12V isn't visible. I dont care either or. But I do care about having a proper sound system. For me(see what I did by adding "for me"? I made it indisputable ;) ), driving a car without a sound system is like going to a party with no alcohol. It's nice, but something is missing
Anyway, 12V is far down on the 2 do list on this project. I was just curious if anybody had converted the alternator.

I have seen a finnish 50s AZU it had an modern 12v altenator mounted transversally on the gearbox with the drivebelt around the brakedrum... ;-)
Could 435 cylinders/pistons be fitted/adapted?

Haha proper back yard mechanic stuff. And that would seriously mess up the clean look of the original dynamo setup and engine bay, that I like so much.

How about this..:

An alternator on 1960 AZU...

A homemade "RAF" intake manifold...

Some shiny bits...

Photos from snail -forum. Don't know is that "12 hp M4" -engine project finished, he has some other projects going on also. A steam boat, A-Ford rod, a little baby girl etc...

I did once put a 12 volt alternator on a 425, it is very easy. Weld a u profil to the manifold put the alternator on it mount a 2cv6 fan, bin the dynamo and your done..

I wonder what a pallet would cost, I've got 7 here

You can, in theory, put 602 M4 barrels/heads/manifold on a 425 bottom end... but then you've basically created an M4 because that's almost exactly what it is, but with a beefier crank.

Pics of the German 425, sounded lovely:
