I may as well start 2019 as I left off, messing with a probably knackered engine and gearbox.

So after 2 weeks of soaking, one nut loosened off nicely but see how dry it is between the end of the nut and the internal rubber seal. I guess that's why occasional heating is necessary. I didn't do that 'cos I was away.

The other one didn't want to move so rather than wreck it I was able to spring the pipes enough to unwind the whole unit off:it's gone back into the Red stuff, awaiting more attention.

and also on two out of 4 followers.
The oil pump has also seen some water.
I'm hoping the cam and cam followers will polish up. I seem to have read somewhere? about a 'Clack' test for finding out if the big ends are ok. does anyone know how I can check it and the other bearings for excessive wear? Or should I just clean everything up, with new pistons and barrels, lap the heads,valves and fit appropriate seals and run it? This is my first time right inside a 602 and I know nothing about tolerances...but I'm willing to learn ;)

I've never been right inside one.

Read a post where Ken said something along the lines of resting the crank on blocks and the whilst holding the con rod, tapping the big end upwards with a rubber hammer. If I recall, you may feel the 'knock', if there is one.

Rob and Roger,
the technique which I use was demonstrated by a French chap in a video which I can no longer find.
The crankshaft is held in one hand, suspended by a conrod, then the little end is given a good thump downwards with your other hand.
(Gloves are advisable)
Any play in the big end of that conrod produces an audible 'clack'.
Repeat for the other conrod and if both are silent, you're good to go...

It's still holding it's breath in the Tinto Rouge Derv. along with the cylinder heads etc. I've not enough space to have the engine and the gearbox lying around in bits (since the van departed the tent has become a slum):if Daisy was away,however, they'd be in the kitchen (where it's nice and warm) :) .

Getting soft in my old age, no more petrol washing. This stuff is supposed to leave an anti-corrosion coating on the parts.

This is where the engine made long term contact with the soil. I'll have to get more aggressive with an angle grinder wire wheel for aesthetics.

I tend to use a toothbrush size brass brush.

A dishwasher can get part surprisingly clean. :D
