Not sure why, but from what I've seen, a kingpin which is a loose fit in the arm always moves upwards, never downwards.
If the resultant scraping, graunching noises are ignored for long enough, the pin can grind so much metal off the constant velocity joint's casting that the outer driveshaft needs to be replaced...
