 Re: 1979 Jaune Mimosa 2CV
Slow progress over the last couple of days, I've painted the chassis again because every time I open the garage door and look at it I don't feel it's good enough. The shotblasters used such a heavy media to blast it the finish that's left is so rough the paint seems to soak into it. I am just using Tetrosyl chassis black which is a pretty shite paint product but I've had good results with it on underbody and suspension components before but it's nothing like as good as an HMG product we use at work which used to be called simply HBZP (High Build Zinc Phosphate) and is now called OCF4 (One Coat Finish 40% Gloss). Whereas the Chassis black is very glossy and Needs a really good key to adhere (shotblasting, ideally) this stuff just needs to have a grease free surface (ie, washed with thinner a couple of times) and it stays adhered under some quite harsh conditions. For example, I painted my fire surround at home with it, as well as my bannister rail, after a year of being heated to the point it's untouchable and having hands run up and down it all day it's not shown any signs of coming off. We painted a number of lamp posts in it at work which we meant to gloss over (we use it as a primer) but after 18 months of 'not getting round to it' the posts are still as good as the day we left them.
I'll probably do something I've never bothered with before and make some attempt at rustproofing the car and all the underbody components, so even if the paint isn't as hard wearing as I'd wanted it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
The last couple of days I've been busy at work and 2cv progress hasn't been great. The rear axle and steering rack are now refinished and in my garage waiting to go back on the car. The rack needs to be put back together again but I'm confident it's ok now.
I've decided to repaint the front arms in the same HMG paint I've done all the other bits in, so they're still at work awaiting that, I might whizz up there this afternoon and do that if I find time.
Last night I assembled all the components to make two spring cans, thanks to Sam Fieldhouse who has temporarily loaned me a spare pair he had. I had to do some chopping about to find two good cans, four good end caps and four good threaded tube slider things (what are they called?). I'll weld them together and paint them too, should I make it up to work later.
The tank saddle is painted, the shock mounts are painted, and next I will clean the tank and refit that so I can fit the fuel pipe in the right place.
So, a lot of waffle and not much actually done. Hopefully I'll have something like an element of progression by the end of the weekend. My missus has bought a new laptop so I'm not limited to using an Apple device upon which I can't take decent pictures. That said, my better half is away for the weekend with the nipper, and leaving me here with her new laptop and the wifi means all I'll have achieved this weekend is ripping my own cock half off.
