Yep. Keep it simple. Put a muff on in cold weather. The power used driving the fan is small. Other improvements can more than make up for it.

But I wouldn't want to encourage people to stop messing about and experimenting with things and making stuff in their sheds*.

*Except Lomaxes. They are fucking dreadful.

Cold Oil .....as the in Finland..... Sump Heater

Well...

We have quite cold, almost every winter. This started without warming oil with the sump heater. They are quite hard to find anymore, as I recall the only nearly bolt-on heater was made for GS engine...

And what about electric fan. I tried, used blower from Bx 19GTi, only needed to cut blades a little. It could be installed deep enough, but still there wasn't enough airflow to cool engine when driving 100km/h on +20°C at summer. City traffic wasn't problem at all...

At first there was only a switch to operate the fan, later I made a PWM -controller with temp sensor on cylinder head. After some month testing, I returned to original, it didn't work like I wanted...

Also there was need to have bigger alternator, I used with the fan 55 or 60 amp alternator, also from Bx. The alternator worked quite well, only problem was when idling after starting, the alternator took too much power some time after starting...

I don't think I'll try this again, but who knows...

Based on the recent information provided by you guys, i changed my mind and won't be going to test it myself.
Apparently i underestimated the power needed for the fan.

-27 degrees if I can see it right.. Thanks for your replay, first replay which is build on reel numbers...

What I don't understand is that driving in town (so less driving wind) the fan does do the job and driving on motorway 100 km/h +20 degrees Celcius and the car runs hot????

Will an electric fan really blocking the driving wind or what....

In my mind driving 100km/h the driving wind alone must be enough to cool the engine down without any fan, so what goes wrong when mounting an electric fan????

Or maybe as A-zuiper says. Seperating the oilcooler. Blinding the place where the oilcooler normally sits so even more cooling air goes to the cilinders and a separate oilcooler with fan....

lpgo,
In addition to the fact that an electric fan will act as a restriction above a certain forward velocity, you need to take some other factors into account.
How about physics, rolling resistance, aerodynamics and so on? ;)

(Very) approximate figures for the power required to propel an (average) automobile along its merry way.

Speed......Total resistance......Required power
35 mph....374 N...................6 kW = 8 hp
60 mph....558 N...................15 kW =20 hp
80 mph....775 N...................28 kW =38 hp

Maybe also take into account that problem with the thermal efficiency of a petrol engine being less than 30%, so there's a fair amount of waste heat with which to deal.

Ken

Now this is the thing I want to investigate...

We are assuming at the moment that it will act as a restriction but is this true and how about mounting a 2cv fan to an electric fan-motor. How will that perform...

How about taking the oilcooler out of there and move it to the fender like I have already at my turbo car.... putting some electric fans to it....

Can't say for sure, testing was made some 15 years ago...

The fan what I used, wasn't efficient enough in higher speeds. Result was, in oil temperatures, almost same with fan or without at 100km/h. Original fan must move air much more than this electrical fan..?

One solution came to my mind, with "real car". In Sm, with A/C, there is a mano-switch in diravi centering pressure pipe, and it switch off fans when speed is above certain speed (don't recall for sure, something between 80-120km/h), so there is enough moving air for cooling the A/C system in higher speeds without electric fan. Thinking about that, they have find same issues with fan, in factory over 45 years ago...
