Joolz,
didn't have the info to hand at Registers when Sean did some work on Sam's van, but have rebuilt an M4 engine since then.
Oddly enough, although M4s have lower CR than later 602s, Citroen specified less total advance with the range being 24*- 28* compared to 28* - 38*.
The static timing position given with the 'peg in hole' is also different, 12* for M4 compared with 8* for later engines.

To simplify the above, the 'full advance' mark on an M4 should be 5 teeth round from the static mark, with the usual proviso that if the engine doesn't pink at that setting, it's probably worth trying a few degrees more advance.

The timing at idle isn't actually critical, so long as the engine idle smoothly. What's important is that it's correct when the engine is working hard, that's why the strobe is used to check the timing at over 3000 rpm. Track down Ken's instructions, but check if the numbers are the same for an M4.

As they're all the same and haven't changed drastically over a few thousand miles, I would suspect a bit of a mismatch of parts somewhere along the line.

In _that_ engine? How very unlikely.

Some recent adventures...

Also solved a charging issue... the internal fuse in the alternator was really quite melted so it's been replaced with some 15amp fuse wire. All seems well.

It's had a good service, new coil, leads, plugs, points and condenser and an oil change so it's all set for use through the winter now :)
