 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
Looks like a grin to me, If I was offered a go I wouldn't need asking twice. These things may be follies, but isn't that the case for most of what we do for fun? And I wish anybody could make grp bodywork, I've been not making a fiberglass seat for my bike for a couple of years.

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
You could make almost any mot failure roadworthy for the cost of that dreadful bathtub, but instead some wannabe Caratacus Potts would rather make a pointless car that won't carry luggage, passengers or the slightest hint of dignity and spend far in excess doing so, so they can plod around the countryside slowly and get rained on. Total waste of time, effort and machinery. I look forward to overtaking one in my 2cv in the pissing rain, preferably when I've got four people and a bootful of luggage on board. What is the object of it? It's no faster, much less practical, no more reliable and just as expensive as buying any other 2cv, probably more so if you want those awful wire wheels.

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
'Borderline' scrapper is a very loose term, once upon a time it covered something with one hole in the floor, or a loose kingpin, these days some people will pay to have the complete bottom 6" of their car replaced. MOT failures are regularly over £500 on ebay these days, but there are still some around, colapsed in fields and gardens, that no-one in their right mind thinks is worth restoring. I agree that most of us could buy and put a car on the road for £1000-1500, less than the £1800 they want for that shell, but if this was about cheap practical motoring we'd all spend £500 on an 1.1 saxo, be able to lift the shopping into an easy to access boot, and hold a conversation at 80mph on the motorway. I reckon one of these should weigh in at under 500kg when finished, and combined with better aerodynamics, would be noticeably quicker than a standard 2cv, let alone one weighed down by 3 passengers and luggage. I'll concede that if I'd spent the £2500-3000 that I reckon it would cost to build that, I'd want a bit more than 29hp.

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
You can buy an E36 M3 for that money nowadays, that's got a roof and a heater, and you can get all your friends and luggage in AND it's not going to make you look like a berk should you have to drive it past population.
I confess, I don't have any tolerance for 2cv kit cars, but that's mainly because I simply do not understand the point of them. In my eyes it's sawing one of your legs off then trying to convince everybody it's a much better way of life than having two legs.

The only thing I agree with is the notion of weighing them in...

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
I'm not for one minute suggesting that if you needed a car and had a £3000 budget you should consider building a 2cv based kit. There are any number of good, competent, fast, practical, even interesting cars that could be had for that money. Also, and perhaps I should say this quietly, given that situation I also wouldn't spunk the lot on a 2cv. What I said was that I thought it was quite acceptable looking, and at the right time and place would be fun. That time and place would be a summer jolly round the countyside, and not taking the mrs and kids xmas shopping. I do have to admit that since earlier I have had a look at the youtube links in the ebay advert, and can't deny it sounds like a cement mixer with a broken exhaust, and the driver does look a berk, sitting far to high in the cockpit.! However while it's confession time, I've gone back to look at the pic Ken posted several times, I reckon I could build something like that for a few hundred...

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
I like kens picture too I do like my transport to be fun and fun is not always with massive hp. I suppose Russell is counting how many 2cv parts are in it before we get a verdict. Only joking.

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
My maths says he's lost about 154grams per wheel, assuming 2.5 mm wheel thickness, 12mm small holes, 25mm large holes, and 13 of each size, but any of those figures could be wrong. He'll have made the wheels more flexible but hard to tell how much, at least if the start cracking it'll be easy to spot. Should be safe to assume they needn't be as strong as for a full car. More importantly it looks cool.
