Post Modern 3 wire alternator wiring
Can anyone shed some light on how to wire a Denso 3 wire alternator!?
I'm half way there but just need to know how to run the ignition wire (1) via a lamp (which I wanted to use the original igntion/oil light in dash)
Image
I have looped the switched wire (2) on to the starter solenoid terminal (3) as per the hot rodders: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30629
So, I need to remove/bypass the external regulator (2pin type), I see one side of it is switched, can I just bridge the plugs at the regulator? does the switched wire run via my big red warning light by chance?

Thanks!

Harley

Have you got a manual for a Visa?
Visa alternator is 3 wire and the diagram for connection is in manual

Cheers

Harley,
Add one of these

Can order it so when its charging correctly the LED is out.

Have a look at this
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CDUQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fkb-kbh.dk%2Fshipslib%2Fel_ombord%2Falternatorhandbook_ocr.pdf&ei=IAtPUuG4PKes0QXjpIHwBw&usg=AFQjCNF0kCeYe6-7ZAajPH2ePsWZfuAxwg&sig2=w8en8tX1BBqWeeuIaMbSMg&bvm=bv.53537100,d.d2k

should launch right into a PDf good little handbook covering all alternator types

When i wired in the Visa alternator I used a separate warning light (amber) on the dash as its needed to create the field current. I didnt want oil pressure switches interfearing. Its best practice to have a separate oil and charge light - you can drive 100s of miles with no alternator but very few with no oil pressure, it would be a good idea to know which is causing a warning light.

From this dash lamp i ran a pair of wires both with spade terminals on the end these are than plugged in to the 2 outside terminals on the plug that went on to the now redundant V.reg ( one side is ignition live the other ends up at the alternator - it didnt matter which was which for the Visa/Motorolla alternator) For belts and braces a resistor should bridge the 2 wires in the circut so that if the bulb fails the alternator still gets power.

some alternators have a +ve field wire ( which would be done by bridging the 2 outer terminals in the block and using the original alternator wire for field) and then a 2nd wire that runs to the warning light and then presumably to earth I didnt pay much attention to that alternator set up as it wasnt necessary for the Visa type alternator. Sometimes on some Alternators there is a 3rd terminal as a test/legacy terminal that's unused in normal running.

Your main output is fine as it is.

Pictures later if you need it but its dark on this side at the moment.

Thanks for the write up Sean! I'll have to see where I can fit another warning light.
Nice item there Pete, although I would need to add a resistor for the led to create the field current although this may already have one.
I do have a Visa manual, I'll check it out :-)

@Harley
The LED is a PIC so that is can be configured by the supplier to your specs and only monitors the volts.
The field circiut will be separate..

This needed a few spacers here and there to make it fit but was easier than expected.

I used two of the original adjustment brackets to good effect.

This is how I wired it down the buisness end...

Does it work?
What's the alternator originally off?

Farknose at the minute... I've been side tracked building an inlet plenum out of a fire extinguisher
I still need to wire the ignition side and get a new battery as this one only holds 9.5 volts :?
Can't remember what it came off, think it was Daihatsu (Charade?), I just searched the smallest engines I could find at the wreckers for something that looked reasonable modern/abundant, it had a serpentine pulley before I put an oversize V-pulley on it.
