I think you did well.
We started off with an old welder too, but after a few hours cursing and swearing we decided it was better to buy a new welder.
And I still am very glad we did.

That's good to hear, Geert. In spite of this being a (virtually) zero-cost purchase, I still suffered boughts of "shopper's remorse" after I'd bought the item.

Haven't used it yet (too cold - and haven't had time to buy a bottle of C02/Argon).

Your van's looking good, by the way!

Only just spotted this; are you certain that you've got both main bearing shells correctly orientated?
There are two thin steel dowels/pins in the offside crankcase half which must engage with drillings in the shells.
If they're not lined up correctly, the bearings will be damaged. :(

Putting the case back together was interesting. The crank wouldn't turn when I tried to tighten the case (the two halves were very reluctant to mate together), so I loosened everything off and will leave it with a slight gap for now.

Hi Ken,
I took the engine apart again after my post about taking the engine apart (see previous page) and noticed the pins in the offside crankcase, then engaged them with the drillings. It was a bit of a struggle, but I managed it OK in the end - and got the crank and cam in the correct relative positions - and the engine fitted back together snuggly. No damage. Presumably, if the bearings were damaged they'd be out of shape, yes?

...boughts of "shopper's remorse"?? Is that a expression, or a fault in typing?

Yes , my van is looking oké, i am only a bit dissapointed that it did not pas the MOT.
But it is solvable, so no worries. Hope the snow will disappear soon .

Have you got a 32amp socket to run that off?

No mate. As I understand it, I'll be safe up to around 150 amps on a UK 13 amp plug - and at 150 amps I'll be OK up to 4mm thick steel on a butt weld, according to the guide on mig-welding.co.uk.

More than enough for my 2CV needs - I hope!
