Fwiw, the first gear synchromesh mechanism is in place in every late model gearbox, but the braking clip is absent. I'd guess the consequences of hitting 1st when trying to engage 3rd were just a little bit too severe...  ken |

I can engage first from a a higher gear while still moving, without double declutching and revving up - so it seems it's synchronised. It takes a bit longer and with less force on the lever for it to be a smooth change (I guess that's because of the super short ratio of the 1st gear, and a bigger gap than between the rest of the gears), but I don't hear any grinding
