I'd completely forgotten (did I even know?) that Amis were built at Rennes. I used to teach English there, and always made a lesson out of getting my students to give me a factory tour. Mind you by that time it was C5 Citroëns and just starting Peugeot 407s. Occasionally I'd get a sneaky peak of something not yet out like the 407 coupé test panel pressings.

I bet some of the lot I taught were probably there for Ami production, they were getting on a bit. Mind youthe factory was totally different inside, all whirring robots and blokes just loading up pallets for the robots to take parts from. Aside that is for the headlamp fitting woman and her suede covered mallet.

Maybe you'll recognise some from here, where they're making XMs: -

Oh the Xsara one is right when I started teaching there, at then end whe he's walking between the two rows of buildings on his way out there's a Xantia parked, which was one of the HR pool cars, and regularly served as a teaching aid.

I've still got my visitor's pass for the plant, I wonder if it works?

I found a video of the Portuguese assembly lines which I don't think has been posted.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU70ekyF25E

I'm not certain scraping the body along the floor will have done much for the quality, and I particularly like around 5"10 where the guy hops out of the half finished car his mates have just pushed down the ramp and goes off to get the next one, complete with steering wheel/column in his hand.

Fascinating video, I would love a copy if someone can find a download version.

Just shows how bad 2CV's were put together and just how much labour was involved. What it doesn't show is that loads of these cars ended up being stored in a flooded field because they weren't selling.
