Re: Knife Edge wear & battered spring cans
Maybe this solution can help getting the grease where it belongs..... The welded suspension eyes are prone to crack. I aways check them for cracks when working on the suspension. So far I have found two, and changed them before anything happened.

Perhaps my understanding of the shackle is wrong, but surely the grease is needed at the contact point between the knife edge and the shackle?

Whatever you do, the grease will be forced out of that contact point by the load on the suspension. All you can do is keep it nearby, and hope it helps to lubricate the movement. So - put a nipple in the shaft like that, and will it do something? Well, force grease in, and it's got to go somewhere. It can't go out of the threaded shaft end of the shackle - because that's got the tie-rod screwed in. It can't easily get out of the sides - because of the teflon spacers/washers. OTOH - given the visible wear on the sides of our rear shackles, those teflon washers would have fallen out long ago.

Re: Knife Edge wear & battered spring cans
Adrian, it's very unusual for the shackle to have moved to one side and stayed there, so I wonder if whoever wound the suspension up so tight had wedged a screwdriver between the shackle and the hanger to limit 'rocking' as he wound it up? By the time the rod was at 'peak tension', there was no chance of the shackle moving back towards the middle of the knife edge. Btw, are the triangular holes in the rear hangers still triangular? Trying to work out how contact was made on two edges of that rear knife edge... ken. p.s. Some scary pictures here of worn knife edges and shackles... < http://2cvgb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php ... kle&page=2 >

Re: Knife Edge wear & battered spring cans
I like the idea of the teflon washers and grease nipple. On one of my 2CVs, I have always squished in as much grease as I could, but found the whole exercise fairly difficult. Also, I think I ended up pushing old grease with grit in it, which wouldn't help.
On the other Raid 2CV, it is not a 5 minute job, as each of the clips has the legs wired together. Much easier to pull out the pins when the car is on a hoist. Ended up using the black sticky moly grease, as I only carry one small greasegun on Raid, and that is the grease I have in it.
I have seen those ends with the rotating bush and often thought if they would be good. Trouble is I drive too hard and am not game enough to try then, just in case they broke.
