Yep.Great party trick. Sounds terrific. Problem is, that belt not only runs the generator, but also the fan that is behind the generator. The engine is in the rear. There are some slots in the body above the engine lid. Without the fan running, there is no air getting in. When you subtract "air" from "air cooled", you don't get "cooled". You get "cooked". There are two ways you know when the fan belt breaks on a VW Beetle. Firstly , the generator light comes on (if the bulb works), or otherwise, the engine seizes. Take the 2CV. The fan is bolted directly to the crankshaft (if the fan doesn't work, its because the engine doesn't work). The belt is only used to drive the alternator. You can still drive a long way on the battery. You won't be seizing an engine. For that matter, you could remove the fan and still drive the car, but you need to be cruising quickly to get a good airflow, and I wouldn't recommend this on a very hot day. I think the VW Beetle is a well built, bad design. I think the 2CV is a badly built, good design. The motorists never win, do they. Daffy Duck |

Hi folks. as long as you're referring to the last of the 2CV run, I'd agree that there may be some truth in that statement. The Beetle was a cheap car designed (pinched from the Czechs by Porsche) to travel long distances in a straight line consuming the minimal amount of fuel. It was a good design for what it was intended to do. On old French roads it would probably have fallen apart. So not so well built. My 2CV isn't badly built, it's just French - tough, but not designed to look strong to untrained eyes, as many German cars are. |
