Post Speedometer Suddenly Noisy
Dear team 2cv.

A week or so ago my speedo suddenly started being jumpy, fast jumping as you drove down the road. The same speed reading but oscillating. I popped it out and sprayed some silicone spray down the cable. Then I drove to Brighton and on the way back it was making a sort of high speed clicking or buzzing noise.

Speed is still displayed but with the needle oscillating.

If I can find my old speedo I could pop it back in but I've no idea what I've done with it. But that would tell me if it's the speedo head or the cable.

Has anyone got any experience of this? I'd like to avoid changing the cable ideally.

I think it will be the cable, citroen advises to put a few drops of engine oil in the cable. It not a big deal to change the cable if neccesary. If you take the battery tray out you can get with your hand between the wiring and unscrew the countercable. The wing and side plate out of the way will help the work. it is also possible that the square cable end got play in the tacho-drive. A citroen told me once to put a bit chewing gum in the hole before putting the cable in.

Hmm maybe I should try the chewing gum thing first!

Lubing the cable end didn't help.

Is the cable in two parts maybe? I see the mounting on the bulkhead that then goes to the gearbox.

Put some oil to speedo itself, when cable is removed. If the bearing of speedo is dried, it can behave as You descibe...

I finally got around to having a look at this. Sadly that's how little spare time I have.

I examined the end of the cable and the speedo hole, looks fine to me but maybe play rather than spinning.

I put some chewing gum in. Haha, brilliant.

It still oscillates, but maybe not quite as bad. It doesn't make any noise now.

@AZL57 I owe you a drink.
