I know that the main beam contact in the light switch tends to wear, but is the only way around fixing this a new switch? i have been without main beams for a couple of months now, and i think that it is about time i got it sorted!

Take the switch apart, give all the contacts a good clean, and make sure that they're all making good contact with the drum - you may need to re-spring some of 'em. It's also worth having a double-check with a multimeter. It may just be bulbs or a connection elsewhere...
